John Marshall freshman has Division I women's basketball programs on her trail

Oct. 16—ROCHESTER — Jazmin Daing has yet to play a game of her freshman season in girls basketball at John Marshall, but she is already receiving offers from Division I colleges.

Daing is a 6-foot guard who was a starter for the Rockets as an eighth-grader during the 2023-24 season. She averaged 5.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in her first season as a starter.

And with her stellar play during the AAU season, she has received an offer from the University of Nebraska.

Daing was also invited and had a strong showing at the Prep Girls Hoop Freshmen Showcase in September.

She shoots and drives well and also has an ability to handle a press. She is expected to play a much larger role for John Marshall during the upcoming season. Last year, after the Rockets graduated a pair of Division I players, they were 5-22 under first-year coach Maxx Waring.

Girls basketball teams in Minnesota can begin practicing on Monday, Nov. 13.

It wasn't an official game, but Rochester's Matthew Hurt has gotten a chance to play in the NBA.

Hurt played in an NBA preseason game with the Memphis Grizzlies last week. Hurt, a John Marshall grad, played 20 minutes in the Grizzlies' 103-102 loss to the host Atlanta Hawks.

A 6-foot-9 forward, Hurt saw 20 minutes of playing time. He made one 3-pointer and pulled down three rebounds.

Hurt has played the last two seasons in the G League with the Memphis Hustle, a minor-league affiliate of the Grizzlies. Hurt averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game with the Hustle last season. He shot 59.5% from the field and 39.3% from 3-point range.

He is currently in training camp with the Hustle and Grizzlies.

Hurt recently helped the U.S. win the gold medal in the FIBA 3-on-3, 23-and-under World Cup Championships in Lublin, Poland.

He is expected to start the 2023-24 season with the Hustle. But Hurt could be signed to a two-way contract which means he would get to spend at least part of the season in the NBA with the Grizzlies.
