JJ Taylor, Memphis basketball freshman, has entered the transfer portal

Memphis basketball freshman JJ Taylor has entered the transfer portal, sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Commercial Appeal on Monday.

The news comes the same day as a 247 Sports report that Tigers signee Mikey Williams also was entering the transfer portal.

Taylor, a 6-foot-8 freshman, played in just three games for the Tigers, getting a total of six minutes of playing time. Taylor found playing time hard to come by with the presence of veterans David Jones, Jaykwon Walton, Caleb Mills and Jayden Hardaway. He did not score any points and had one rebound against Jackson State and one against Virginia.

Taylor's last game at Memphis was against Virginia on Dec. 19. He was not at FedExForum for the Tigers' game against Vanderbilt on Dec. 23. Coach Penny Hardaway said after that game that Taylor was absent as a result of breaking team rules.

On Sunday, after Memphis' win over SMU, Hardaway was asked about Taylor's status with the program.

"As far as JJ Taylor — JJ Taylor right now is just still suspended. Waiting on him to finish his suspension," he said.

Taylor was rated a 4-star prospect out of San Ysidro High in San Diego by 247 Sports Composite. He signed with the Tigers in November 2022 and reported to the team in May. Taylor was a high school teammate of fellow top-100 prospect Williams, who signed with the Tigers last year.
