Jimmies women's volleyball survive five set win over Northwestern

Sep. 8—ORANGE CITY, Iowa. — The University of Jamestown narrowly avoided blowing a two sets to none lead in their first GPAC match of the season as they beat Northwestern College in five sets (25-17, 25-22, 17-25, 16-25, 15-7) on Friday, Aug. 8, at the Red Raiders' Bultman Center.

The Red Raiders (9-1, 1-1) got off to a fast start taking an 8-5 lead before the Jimmies took their first lead of the opening set at 10-9. The Jimmies would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the first set finishing it off on a kill from Darienne Johnson to get a 25-17 opening set win.

The Jimmies led wire-to-wire in the second set although it did net a little nervewracking for the No. 17 team in the country as the Red Raiders cut their deficit to within one point six times. However, the Jimmies were able to hold on to the 25-22 second set win.

The Red Raiders proved why they are the No. 3-ranked team in the country in the third set as they were the ones leading wire-to-wire and getting a 25-17 win. The Jimmies had 10 errors in the second set, which would be a sign of things to come as they had 14 errors in the fourth set.

In the aforementioned fourth set, the Jimmies tied the set up at two but then gave up a 4-0 run, helped by three errors to trail 6-2 and they would not be able to tie the set up again from there, losing 25-16. The Jimmies' longest run in the fourth set was a 4-0 run to turn a 15-8 deficit into a 15-11 deficit.

The fifth set saw the Jimmies have their turn at taking advantage of opponent's errors as the Red Raiders had seven total errors in the final set. After a Red Raiders timeout attempted to squelch the Jimmies' momentum, the visitors responded with a 4-1 run to get the 15-7 fifth-set win and secure their seventh consecutive win over the Red Raiders.

In total, the Red Raiders had 34 errors in the match. While the Jimmies had 44 total errors.

The Jimmies return to the court at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they go to Morningside University.
