Jets’ top PFF grades for Week 9
Grades are out from Pro Football Focus for Week 9 and a couple of players scored very high in helping the Jets pull off the big upset over the Buffalo Bills.
We’ll take a look at the top five players on offense and defense for the Jets from Week 9, starting on offense and with one of the key contributors from Sunday’s win.
Top 5 Offensive Grades
Michael Carter – 90.4
C.J. Uzomah – 79.5
Ty Johnson – 76.9
Garrett Wilson – 72.7
Ashtyn Davis – 64.9
(Connor McGovern – 63.9)
McGovern is added to show the actual top five offensive players, since Davis isn’t typically an offensive player but did have a rushing attempt for two yards.
Carter was a key factor, along with James Robinson, on the final offensive drive for the Jets that ultimately won them the game, as Carter had 36 of his 76 rushing yards on that final drive. That helped him score a 91.0 grade in the run game. Incredibly, Carter scored 19.4 in pass-blocking, but we can just skim over that for now.
Garrett Wilson caught eight passes for 92 yards and scored an 81.1 grade in the passing game. Not surprising that he scored well there, especially when you see the fact that he did most of his work facing the highest press-coverage rate of any receiver this season. He also had 33 yards after the catch. That alone was more than any other Jets receiver had in total.
Top 5 Defensive Grades
Sheldon Rankins – 94.5
Bryce Huff – 92.0
Jamien Sherwood – 76.9
John Franklin-Myers – 74.5
Kwon Alexander – 74.3
Quinnen Williams has received a ton of attention and accolades this season, and for good reason, but Rankins continues to quietly post a nice season and Sunday was another example of that. A 94.5 overall grade and a 94.0 pass-rush grade, including being credited with a hurry on Josh Allen and forcing a fumble.
On a similar note, Bryce Huff continues to impress, even in limited action. Huff played just 16 snaps but had a sack and a hurry of Allen and also forced a fumble. It’s Huff’s second game with at least a 90 grade (90.3 in Week 5 against Miami).
Franklin-Myers led the way with five pressures, including four hurries and a hit. He talked the talk during the week and wound up backing up his words in Week 9.
Shoutout to Sherwood for playing well in place of C.J. Mosley when he left for a short time due to what became a minor arm injury.
As far as other players that weren’t in the top five on offense, James Robinson was 8th with a 62.6 grade, Zach Wilson was 9th with a 61.5, and interestingly enough, Denzel Mims was 22nd with a 56.8.
On defense, Sauce Gardner was 6th with a 74.0. Gardner was targeted three times and only gave up the one catch to Stefon Diggs at the beginning of the game and had the big pass-breakup on fourth down to seal the victory as well as an interception.
Jordan Whitehead, who had the other interception of Allen, was 7th with a 68.9 and C.J. Mosley was 9th at 66.6.
And in the surprising grades department, Quinnen Williams was 15th with a 62.2 grade (29.9 tackling grade, somehow) and D.J. Reed was 19th with a 58.9 grade. Take those grades how you will.
