Jets' Sam Darnold ruled out vs. Eagles while mono complications still a concern
New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will not play in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced Friday.

Darnold has been out with mononucleosis and returned to practice this week. He was preparing to be the starter, but was understandably cautious due to the complications that can arise from mono. One side effect is an enlarged spleen and if it’s ruptured, a higher possibility in a professional athlete, it could create life-threatening issues.

“I want to make sure I’m safe out there and that, you know, I’m not going to die,” Darnold said in a news conference, via the AP.
He underwent an ultrasound and blood tests on Friday to see if he would be able to play.
Darnold has missed two games so far for the winless Jets (0-3), who are coming off an open week. They have struggled without their top-3 draft pick from 2018. The situation was complicated further when Trevor Siemian suffered a season-ending leg injury in Week 2, forcing the Jets to turn to Luke Falk. Falk had never played in an NFL game.
