Jets expected to sign journeyman quarterback Trevor Siemian: sources

NEW YORK — Following Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles injury in Week 1, the Jets did not immediately sign a veteran quarterback to their roster.

But two consecutive losses and dismal quarterback play from Zach Wilson made Gang Green rethink its position.

The Jets are planning to sign Trevor Siemian to their practice squad pending a physical, according to sources. On Monday, Jets coach Robert Saleh was asked if the team would sign a veteran QB to their roster, but he deferred the question to general manager Joe Douglas.

Before the addition of Siemian, Wilson and Tim Boyle were the only quarterbacks on the Jets roster. After Rodgers’ injury against the Bills, Wilson suddenly became the Jets starting quarterback again.

This season was supposed to be a reset for Wilson after the Jets acquired Rodgers in a trade with the Packers. However, Rodgers’ Achilles tear forced Wilson to become the starting quarterback again after he struggled mightily during his first two years as the Jets starter.

In the three games this season, Wilson has passed for 467 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He has a quarterback rating of 57 and has completed just 52.4% of his passes.

Despite his poor play, Saleh has remained committed to Wilson as the Jets' starting quarterback. But now the leash has somewhat gotten shorter with the expected arrival of Siemian.

“Are there things that he can do better, of course,” Saleh said. “Are there things we can do better around him as teammates, of course. Are there things we can do better as a coaching staff, absolutely.

“At the end of the day, everyone is held accountable to the results on the football field. We all are. Whether it be dropped passes, a missed protection, whatever it might be, looking at the box score isn’t always going to tell the whole story.”

This will be Siemian’s second stint with the Jets as he was with the club in 2019. He started one game for Gang Green after then-starter Sam Darnold was out due to mononucleosis. But against the Browns, Siemian only completed 3 of 6 passes before he suffered an ankle injury after being hit by Browns defensive end Myles Garrett that prematurely ended his season.

Since entering the NFL in 2015 out of Northwestern, Siemian has played for the Broncos, Jets, Saints and Bears. He has thrown for 7,027 yards, 42 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

The Jets will host the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football at MetLife Stadium.
