Jessica Pegula defeats Emma Raducanu in Western & Southern Open round of 16

MASON, Ohio − Emma Raducanu, who unseated two Grand Slam champions in Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka during the rounds of 64 and 32, respectively, has officially been scratched from the Western & Southern field.

She fell Thursday night in a not-so-sweet round of 16 match of straight sets to Jessica Pegula.

The first set was too close for comfort. Raducanu held onto the tail of Pegula all the way until they hit the breaking point. From there, Pegula was able to swing out two more points than her opponent and take the victory, 7-5.

The second set started out the same way, with Pegula in the lead and Raducanu scrambling to keep up. She did, for the most part, only losing grip when Pegula managed to break five points first, again, and then eventually closed it 6-4.

Pegula will advance into the quarterfinals on Friday, with time, opponent and court still to be announced.
