Jays place struggling RHP Stroman on DL

The Toronto Blue Jays placed struggling right-hander Marcus Stroman on the 10-day disabled list Friday with right shoulder fatigue.

The move is retroactive to Thursday. The Jays also optioned left-hander Tim Mayza to Triple-A Buffalo. Right-handers Joe Biagini and Sam Gaviglio were recalled from Buffalo in corresponding moves.

Stroman is 0-5 with a 7.71 ERA in seven starts this season. The 27-year-old dealt with shoulder inflammation in the spring that forced him to push back his first start.

"It just got to a point where it became very frustrating, physically and mentally," Stroman told reporters. "Just at a point where I felt like I had to work at 115-120 percent when I would normally be working at 80-85 percent to do what I do out there.

"Just a collective decision between me and the staff, to take a step back, do what I need to do for my shoulder, get my emotions and everything in sync, to get back to myself. I haven't been myself out there at all."

Stroman has thrown more than 200 innings in each of the past two seasons. He posted a career-best 3.09 ERA in 33 outings last year.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins indicated Stroman's DL stint could go longer than 10 days.

"We'll see. I think from the rest, the recovery, Marcus has talked about how that has weighed on him mentally. That will be a part of it, that recovery and getting back into the right mindset, the right state of mind and then the right physical state," Atkins said. "It could be days before he starts to get on the mound again. We're confident that it will be, but really it has to be a day at a time."
