Jay Scrubb envisions dynamic backcourt with JD Davison

An impressive Summer League saw Jay Scrubb earn himself a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics for the upcoming season. Scrubb, 22, will be playing for his third team in four years after entering the NBA as the 55th pick in 2020. As a late second-round pick, Scrubb has spent most of his career in the G-League.

Last season, as part of the Lakeland Magic, Scrubb would have been facing off against JD Davison. Now, the two backcourt players will likely be teammates for the Maine Celtics. During a recent interview with Adam Taylor of CelticsBlog and USA Today, Scrubb noted how he’s excited at a potential partnership between him and Davison.

“Yeah, me and JD, we’ve had plenty of talks,” Scrubb said. “Even when I wasn’t with the Celtics, I had come down, and we played each other in Maine and things like that. We’ve always had a great relationship, and I’m excited to be able to match up, you know what I’m saying? And be a backcourt with him, man, it’s exciting.

He’s a point guard that’s a pass first. He’s a guy that likes to throw lobs and likes to get out in transition. And I’m the same way. I’m a guy that likes to run, you know what I’m saying? Get shots up quick. And I can’t wait to get out there and be able to match our skillsets up together, man, and go out there and give some back courts trouble.”

Scrubb will be hoping that his time in Maine is short, as he hopes to crack the Celtics’ primary rotation during the upcoming season. However, Scrubb will face stiff competition for a role within Boston’s guard rotation due to its high-level depth.

Nevertheless, Scrubb cut a confident figure during the interview and clearly has faith in his ability to make good on any chances the coaching staff provides.
