James Okonkwo enters transfer portal after one year at North Carolina

The North Carolina Tar Heels saw a mass exodus of players leave for the transfer portal after the 2022-23 season. But so far there has been just one player to leave so far after this season.

On Friday morning, forward James Okonkwo entered his name into the transfer portal after just one year at North Carolina. The move comes just a few days after Hubert Davis had exit meetings with players.

The 6-foot-8 Okonkwo transferred from West Virginia to North Carolina last Summer. He appeared in 15 games for the Tar Heels with 44 minutes of total playing time, averaging 1 point and 1 rebound per game.

The forward was one of five new players to join UNC’s roster last season out of the portal. In addition to playing at West Virginia, he was also a member of the Great Britain U-20 team in the 2023 Division B European Championships. He spent part of the Summer playing for Great Britain before joining UNC.

UNC is expected to be active in the transfer portal already with some big decisions from other players on the way. It will be curious to see what positions the Tar Heels target after finding success with their additions last year.
