Jalen Ramsey shares first impression of Matthew Stafford: ‘He’s got that chip on his shoulder’

After reaching the Super Bowl two years ago, the Los Angeles Rams regressed in the last two seasons and struggled to play the way they did during the 2018 campaign. Part of that was due to Jared Goff’s struggles as he failed to create explosive plays down the field and turned the ball over far too often.

That led to a change at quarterback with Matthew Stafford coming over from Detroit. The Rams obviously hope he’s the guy to put them over the top as a Super Bowl team, and Jalen Ramsey agrees.

During an interview with Aqib Talib on the “Catchin’ Fades” podcast, Ramsey shared his first impression of Stafford from Rams minicamp and said he believes the veteran is the guy to get the Rams over the hump.

“I think so. It’s a different vibe,” Ramsey said. “You were there with JG and I rock with JG. I think JG showed he can be a winner. … I’ve got a lot of respect for JG. But like you said, they felt that they needed to make a change, especially Sean and how he feels about offense and his quarterback and he feels like this is his guy. Stafford, he definitely got a swag about him. He got a little lowkey swag about him, like a little in control – like, ‘This me. I got this.’ He feels confident that he’s rocking with a better overall team and he’s going to be able to put it together. And he’s got that chip on his shoulder, to be honest with you. He’s got that chip on his shoulder to show people – like, ‘Man, y’all say I got everything else but I can’t win. Alright. Now I’m in an organization that do things the right way.’”

Stafford has put up big numbers throughout his career, but he’s never won a playoff game and only led the Lions to the postseason three times. He isn’t exactly viewed as a “winner,” but a lot of that has to do with the lack of talent in Detroit, specifically on defense.

Now that he has a dominant defense to support him, a great receiving corps and a bright offensive-minded coach, the goal is for Stafford to finally make a deep playoff run and prove he’s better than his 74-90-1 career record indicates.

“Matthew Stafford, he hear his record, with wins and losses,” Ramsey said. “So I feel like it’s going to put that chip on his shoulder and something positive’s going to come out of that. Same with Sean, too, though. Because now it feel like, ‘Hey, y’all said we couldn’t do this. Now watch us work.’ I think some positives going to come out of that.”
