Should Jaguars’ Branden Albert be worried about not seeing the field in 2017?

One of the more underrated positions in football is offensive tackle, specifically the left side. The left tackle is supposed to protect the quarterback at all cost. Branden Albert is a well known tackle around the league having played with Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and now the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Albert was traded from the Dolphins to the Jaguars this past offseason and is expected to start at left tackle once Week 1 comes around. Now the Jaguars will have a competition on their hands that involve Albert and rookie offensive lineman Cam Robinson. The Jags drafted the 6’6″ big tackle out of Alabama in the second round, 34th overall.

Albert is 32 years old and Robinson is only 21 years old. There is a big advantage for both players, one has more experience but the other is much younger and has time to develop and learn the offense. Albert has had trouble in his career when it comes to injuries which the Jags will need adjust to.

It’s hard to see Albert losing the battle to Robinson, but anything is possible. Albert knows what it’s like to go up against the best in the league so he has an advantage there. If anything, the two may switch on and off and get reps but Albert may get more of them because of his experience.

Should Albert be worried?

Branden Albert shouldn’t be too concerned. It should be a thought in the back of his head that someone who may make a big impact in the future could start over him this year. We could see Robinson start in some games if Albert does not live up to the expectations that are put on him or if he suffers another injury. For now, expect Albert to be the starter in Week 1 and how he performs throughout the season will determine if he will continue to start.
