Jacksonville Icemen stop losing skid, defeat Atlanta Gladiators Tuesday

Turning point: Brendan Harris scored only 75 seconds into the game and the Jacksonville Icemen never looked back, defeating the Atlanta Gladiators 3-1 in Tuesday night's ECHL hockey at Gas South Arena.

Three stars: 1. Harris, Jacksonville (two goals, one assist). 2. Craig Martin, Jacksonville (one goal, two assists). 3. Alex Whelan, Atlanta (one goal).

Penalty box: Special teams came through for the Icemen, who scored twice on the power play and killed off a two-man disadvantage that lasted nearly two full minutes late in the second period.

Around the rink: Matt Vernon made 24 saves in the net for Jacksonville (5-5-2-0), which climbed out of the ECHL South Division cellar. ... The Icemen halted a skid of four games without a win, including three regulation losses. ... Gustavs Grigals saved 24 of 26 Jacksonville shots, then exited the net midway through the third period with Tyler Harmon coming on in the net for Atlanta (8-4-0-0). ... Christopher Brown and Brandon Fortunato got assists for the Icemen.

Up next: The Icemen return home to play the South Carolina Stingrays at 7 p.m. Wednesday at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
