Jackson State softball knocked out of NCAA Tournament by California

The Butler did it to Jackson State softball on Saturday.

California's Elon Butler had a second-inning grand slam to power the Golden Bears to a 15-0 run-rule victory, eliminating the Tigers from the NCAA Tournament in the Baton Rouge Regional at Tiger Park.

The Tigers (33-19), who earned their berth by winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament, lost their opening game Friday to host LSU, 5-0.

Butler also had an RBI double in the first inning. California (37-18) had 16 hits, while Jackson State was limited to one hit, a single by .Gabrielle Willis in the second inning.

The Golden Bears broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning while sending 13 hitters to the plate. California scored two runs in third and four in the fourth.

The game was called by the run rule, which awards a team the victory when it leads by at least eight runs after five innings.

Jackson State hurt its chances by committing four errors that allowed California to score eight unearned runs.
