Jackson State coach Deion Sanders: Alabama State's postgame scoreboard stunt 'childish'

Alabama State didn’t pull any punches Saturday after handing Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders and his Tigers a 35-28 loss in Montgomery, Alabama.

After the Hornets (2-1, 2-1 SWAC) handed the Tigers (3-1, 2-1) their first loss, a photo of Sanders from his draft day in 1989 was placed on the video scoreboard at ASU Stadium.

Sanders had a response of his own to the supposed jab from the Tigers’ conference rival.

“Childish,” Sanders said in reference to the photo. “It is what it is. They know they messed up.”

According to Sanders, Alabama State didn’t furnish tickets for the Jackson State fanbase or allow the team into the locker room to unpack until Saturday morning, as well.

“I’m going to call them out on it,” Coach Prime said. “That’s what it was. They tried to respond with a bit of foolishness. We’ve got to keep it on the field and make it about the kids, make it about the fans. It’s not about me.”

After ASU coach Donald Hill-Eley finished celebrating the win with his team, he was asked about the incident as well. He said he didn't know it was going happen.

"No, I don't look up and around most of the time," Hill-Eley said. "I'm only in charge of the guys with the helmets."

Jackson State overcame a 14-8 halftime deficit to take a 21-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, a few big touchdown runs from Hornets running back Ezra Gray and a late interception thrown by JSU quarterback Jalon Jones sealed the victory.

Jackson State returns home to face Southern in a nonconference game on April 3 at 1 p.m.
