Islanders' Scott Mayfield undergoes season-ending surgery for lower-body injury

The Islanders announced on Tuesday that defensemen Scott Mayfield has undergone season-ending surgery for a lower-body injury.

The team says Mayfield is expected to make a full recovery and that he will not have any issues with his summer training regimen.

Mayfield, 31, suffered an ankle injury in the first game of the season but tried to play through it. Mayfield played 41 games this season, with his final game coming on Feb. 22 against St. Louis. He was placed on long-term IR in early March.

It was certainly a frustrating season for the defenseman, who signed a seven-year, $24.5 million extension with the Islander last July. Mayfield was a -7 on the season, recording five assists, no goals, and racking up 35 penalty minutes.
