No. 4 Wayne 8, No. 5 Remsen St. Mary’s 2

The Falcons cruised back Remsen St. Mary’s to a spot in the Class 1A state semifinal. Wayne will play No. 1 seeded Martensdale-St. Mary’s on Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m.

Remsen St. Mary’s led off with two runs in the top half of the first inning, but the War Eagles couldn’t muster anything else against pitcher Izzie Moore and Wayne’s defense.

The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the first, added one in the fourth and exploded with five runs in the fifth. Devyn Davis had four RBIs; Moore and Clara O’Brien each had two.

No. 1 Martensdale-St. Mary’s 1, No. 8 Fort Dodge St. Edmond 0

It was a fairly even match between the Blue Devils and the Gaels, with the score knotted at zero each through the first five-and-a-half innings.

But it was Martensdale-St. Mary’s — last season’s third-place finisher after losing to eventual champion Twin Cedars in the semifinal round — who pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sydney Bears picked up a hit that drove Ellie Baker home for the first run of the night.

St. Edmond got a runner on first in the seventh inning, but the Gaels had two outs already at that point. Campbell German struck out the next batter and Martensdale-St. Mary’s advanced.

The Blue Devils advance to the Class 1A semifinal on Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m.

No. 3 Central Springs 8, No. 6 West Monona 2

The team racked up nine hits and Cooper Klaahsen dominated in the circle, allowing just three hits and fanning 11 batters.

Central Springs advances to the state semifinals on Wednesday when they'll take on No. 2 Van Meter at 5:30 p.m.

No. 2 Van Meter 6, No. 7 Missouri Valley 1

The Bulldogs eased into the Class 2A state semifinal thanks to a strong pitching performance from Macy Blomgren.

The senior starter pitched all seven innings and allowed only four hits. Blomgren’s biggest stat line in Tuesday’s game was her 15-strikeout performance. She was one short of the 2A record, which Louisa-Muscatine pitcher Isabelle True set in 2018.

Van Meter capitalized on its six hits, scoring at least one run in four innings. Missouri Valley managed its only run in the fourth.

The Bulldogs advance to play on Wednesday, July 19 at 5:30 p.m.

No. 5 Interstate 35 9, No. 4 Lisbon 5

Interstate 35 pulled off a mild upset during the Class 2A quarterfinals at the state softball tournament Tuesday in Fort Dodge.

The fifth-seed Roadrunners downed fourth-seed Lisbon by a 9-5 score to advance to the 2A semifinals with a 26-12 record. They broke a 5-5 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh and then kept Lisbon off the board in the bottom of the inning to get the win.

Lisbon heads into the consolation round with a 34-8 mark.

No. 1 Iowa City Regina 4, No. 8 Northeast 3 (8)

Top seed Iowa City Regina survived a huge scare from eighth seed Northeast during the Class 2A quarterfinals at the state softball tournament Tuesday in Fort Dodge.

The Regals pulled off a 4-3 victory over the Rebels in eight innings.

Kennedy Conner was the hero. She singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to advance the Regals to the 2A semifinals with a 28-8 record.

Northeast fell to 22-12 heading into the consolation round.

No. 3 Wahlert Catholic 10, No. 6 Benton 0

The Golden Eagles cruised through the quarterfinal round with a big win over Benton.

It only took five innings for Wahlert Catholic to advance to the semifinals. Golden Eagles’ pitcher Julia Roth allowed just three hits but no runs with zero errors in the win, and she struck out five.

Three different players — Anna Roling, Ruth Tauber and Julia Roth — hit home runs to secure the victory for Wahlert Catholic. Tauber recorded three runs and three RBIs on two hits; Roling and Roth each had two RBIs and one run on one hit.

Wahlert Catholic takes on Assumption Wednesday afternoon in the state semifinals.

No. 2 Davenport Assumption 5, No. 7 Saydel 0

The Eagles saw their season come to an end in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday. Assumption was out-hit six to seven by Saydel, but came up with big hits when it mattered most.

They took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first frame and added two more in the second to secure the victory. No player for Assumption got more than one hit on the day, but the true star was in the circle for the Knights. Leah Maro tossed the entire seven innings, giving up seven hits but struck out 10 Saydel batters in the process to secure a trip to the state semifinals for her team.

Assumption will take on the winner of No. 3 Wahlert Catholic vs. No. 6 Benton. That semifinal matchup will be tomorrow at 5 p.m.
