Iowa Hawkeyes field hockey ranked No. 1 in Penn Monto/NFCHA Poll

It’s good to be at the top! The Iowa Hawkeyes field hockey team is just that. The ladies have found themselves ranked No. 1 in the newest Penn Monto/NFHCA poll.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) put the Hawkeyes above everyone else. This marks the second time that the Iowa Hawkeyes have been atop the field hockey world in this poll. The other No. 1 ranking came in 2021.

Iowa is 4-0 and the climb to the top spot is due to beating previous No. 1 ranked North Carolina. The Tar Heels came in at No. 2 in the poll, just a mere 36 points behind the Hawkeyes.

Iowa has been stingy this year allowing just two goals in four games along with pitching three shutouts. Both allowed goals came in an overtime win against North Carolina. The other three wins have been against Wake Forest, Fairfield, and UAlbany.

Dionne van Aalsum has led the way for Iowa by accounting for eight of the 13 goals that the Hawkeyes have scored this season. Goalie Mia Magnotta has been stellar as she has 10 saves and an .833 save percentages in four wins so far this season.

The season continues on Friday, Sept. 8 when the Hawkeyes host Central Michigan at Grant Field in their first home game of the season. A matchup on Sunday, Sept. 10, in Iowa City against UMass-Lowell also awaits the Hawkeyes.
