Introducing our new Gadsden Times sports writer: Maxwell Donaldson

Hello, Gadsden Times readers. I am Maxwell Donaldson, your new high school reporter.

You may recognize my name, as I have been helping with coverage over the last few months while serving as an intern at The Tuscaloosa News. I am excited to continue living in Alabama and getting to know the Gadsden area.

A little bit about me: I am a senior at the University of Alabama, which means I'll be completing my final two classes this fall. I have spent the last two years covering Alabama sports, mainly women's basketball and softball, along with high school sports for The Tuscaloosa News. Outside of writing, I like to golf and play guitar. I earned my Eagle Scout in 2019, alongside my twin brother.

It would be a lie to say this isn't a dream come true, as I have been dreaming of being a sports writer since middle school. It was there that my love of sports writing began as I made college football rankings and recaps along with NFL Draft content that never saw the light of the day. From there it only grew until I covered my first live sporting event during my senior year of high school, the 2019 Camping World Bowl after a chance opportunity saw me fly to Orlando and back the day of the game.

Some of the most fun moments I have had while working have come on the sidelines at high school events, so I can't wait to get on the ground and start running in Gadsden. My goal is to provide quality coverage of the special moments for teams and athletes. High school sports are special in the way they can rally a community and build lasting relationships and memories, and I hope to help capture those starting with high school football this fall.

Here's what you can expect from me: high-quality features that go beyond the athlete and tell you about the people, along with strong analysis that will help inform the conversations you as fans have about your local teams.

With that being said don't hesitate to reach out with ideas for stories or even just a good restaurant recommendation (BBQ and meat-and-threes especially).
