Interceptions, concussions, losses: How Colts rookie quarterbacks have fared in Week 1

No. 4 overall NFL Draft pick Anthony Richardson is scheduled to make his debut as the Indianapolis Colts host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 action.

This marks the fourth time in their Indianapolis history the Colts have started a rookie quarterback in Week 1. Jeff George, Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck − all chosen first overall − got on the field immediately.

However, none of those starts resulted in a Colts victory.

With the help of IndyStar archives, here's what happened in those Week 1s.

Andrew Luck

Sept. 9, 2012: 23-of-45 for 309 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions in a 41-21 loss to the Chicago Bears

Luck was also sacked 3 times and lost a fumble.

"Not too many fond memories from this," he said post-game.

One bright spot: Reggie Wayne had 9 catches for 135 yards.

"He's going to be good," Wayne said. "Give him time. Rome wasn't built in a day."

Peyton Manning

Sept. 6, 1998: 21-of-37 for 302 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions in a 24-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins

Terrell Buckley picked off Manning twice, returning one for a touchdown. Manning's touchdown pass went to Marvin Harrison on the last play of the game.

He received praise post-game from teammates, coach (Jim Mora), opposing quarterback (Dan Marino) and father, but the best thing he could manage to say about himself was that it was a learning opportunity.

"I don't care what league you're in; when you lose, you hate it," Manning said.

Jeff George

Sept. 9, 1990: 13-of-24 for 160 yards and 1 touchdown in a 26-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills

George was under siege from the start against Buffalo's pass rush, and he left the game with concussion symptoms in the fourth quarter after getting hit by Cornelius Bennett.

"I was rolling left and I remember hitting the ground. I remember banging my head that that was it," George said post-game. "I'm still a little dizzy."

George was sacked three times and fumbled once.

Darryl Talley, a Bills linebacker who sacked George once, said with a smile: "I sure wouldn't want Bruce (Smith) and Corney (Bennett) in my face all day. They could mess up your looks."
