If you’re the sort of football fan who prefers your games not on TV, your footballs leather and your footballers with mullets, then this story is not for you. Or it is and you will get angry.

Because on Tuesday evening Italian giants Inter Milan posed with home shirts with players’ names replaced by their Instagram handles in their changing room before the home clash with Cagliari.

But for any of you halfway through chucking your laptop out the window, the players didn’t actually wear those shirts during the game, reverting to regular shirts for kick-off.

It was all part of #InterSocialNight (no, us neither) and as part of the marketing drive, plenty of the first team took to their accounts to publicise the the’ personal profiles, including @Samir1Handanovic, @dsanton21 and @ivanperisic444 (sorry).

Unsurprisingly, a lot of fans online replied angrily and mocked the shirts, with our particular favourite being the chap who mocked up the shirts with ‘@Delete’ in place of the Instagram handles.

But Inter then hit back, mocking the “games gone crowd” for moaning about the shirts. Can’t imagine that would have gone down very well either.

The #InterSocialNight is a bit of a big drive from the Nerazzurri. it included a “series of activities both at the stadium and on social media,” with influencers joining the fans inside the stadium “with the aim of creating a buzz around the game on social media”. Because being fifth in the table wasn’t exciting enough.

Fans could buy a “Social Kit” on the night for just €50: the package includes the matchday ticket for a seat located in the first tier Arancio Laterale section and an exclusive Inter Social Night t-shirt as well as entrance to the Arancio Sky Lounge “to continue the party”. Money well spent.

At least they’re trying, eh?

Anyway, in the end the players took to the pitch in normal shirts and went on to win 4-0, a result that took them up to third in the Serie A table from fifth, above Roma and Lazio.

Joao Concelo opened the scoring before after three minutes before Mauro Icardi doubled it just after half-time. Marcelo Brozovic and Manchester United target Ivan Perisic settled it late on.

Oh well, Modern football is rubbish isn’t it? Although let’s be honest if their social media team was worth anything they’d have gone with ‘Intergram’ surely?
