Inter Miami interested in adding women’s club, Beckham says

Inter Miami ownership is not satisfied with signing stars Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Co-owner David Beckham has other visions too, and it includes the addition of an Inter Miami women’s team.

Beckham said he and co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas “definitely” have plans to form a women’s team in an interview with The Athletic. In fact, it’s been a discussion since they established the franchise.

Beckham told The Athletic his daughter, Harper, the youngest of Beckham’s four children, has played a part in his aspiration for an Inter Miami women’s team.

The National Women’s Soccer League is the major professional women’s soccer league in the United States. It was formed in 2012 and consists of 12 teams. The Orlando Pride are the only club located in Florida, and are also one of three teams with a direct affiliation to an MLS team.

The NWSL was preceded by Women’s Professional Soccer, the top-flight women’s professional soccer league in the U.S.. The league only lasted three seasons (2009-12), but fielded a team from Boca Raton for one season: magicJack.

South Florida currently has ties in the USL W League, a pre-professional women’s league that began play in 2022. There are three different clubs in the area: FC Miami City, Florida Elite Soccer Academy and Miami AC.

The USL Super League is a new professional league slated to begin play in August 2024. Tampa has a team and Jacksonville is projected to enter later as an expansion club, but there are no current plans for a team in South Florida.
