Indy high school sports: Three finalists for Marion County Male Athlete of the Year

The Marion County Athletic Association will soon name its City and County Athletes of the Year, an award that dates to 1950 and grew to include girls’ achievements in 1979.

The awards are geared toward athletic achievement, but almost every winner over the years has exhibited impressive credentials in and out of their athletic, academic and personal areas. Generally, multi-sport athletes are given consideration over single-sport athletes, though in some cases a single-sport athlete has been so outstanding that he or she has been selected as the winner.

Here are the three finalists for County Male Athlete of the Year (last year’s winner was Lawrence Central football standout Josh Mickens):

Alex Antonopoulos, North Central

Antonopoulos, a Western Michigan recruit, was 55-0 as a No. 1 singles player as a junior and senior, winning state as a senior as he dropped only one set and won state his senior year. His team won a state championship in 2022 while playing No. 2 singles.

Antonopoulos was 95-6 overall in high school career as a singles player. He was a two-time Marion County champion, a two-time Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champion and a three-time all-state first team No. 1 singles player. Antonopoulos was the Indiana Sports Awards male tennis player of the year and a three-time John Shirley champion, twice at No. 1 singles and once at No. 2 singles.

Antonopoulos is a four-star recruit ranked No. 119 in his class in the nation on the Tennis Recruiting Network. He is ranked No. 126 in the 18-and-under division by the United States Tennis Association. Antonopoulos represented the USTA Central Indiana Tennis Association at regional and national tournaments with multiple finalist finishes in singles and doubles.

Antonopoulos has a 3.92 grade-point average and plans to major in business at Western Michigan.

Bryson Luter, Lawrence Central

Luter earned 13 varsity letters in high school in football, basketball, baseball and track and filed. The Army football commit was named all-Marion County in football and played in the Marion County Senior All-Star game after his senior year of basketball.

Luter, an academic all-state honoree in basketball and distinguished honor roll recipient, was a 4x100-meter relay state qualifier, all-Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference in football, an IFCA all-state selection in football and honorable mention all-MIC in basketball.

Luter is hitting .395 for the Lawrence Central baseball team this spring and is a regional qualifier in the 100 meter-dash and the 4x100-meter relay. He was a three-year starter at quarterback for the football team, passing for 4,177 yards and 35 touchdowns and rushing for 1,412 yards and 18 TDs. Luter averaged 7.8 points and shot 39% from the 3-point line as a senior for the Bears’ basketball team.

Quinn Warren, Brebeuf Jesuit

Warren earned eight varsity letters in soccer, football and basketball, earning all-Marion County honors twice in soccer and once in football.

Warren, who plans to kick and/or punt at Indiana and study business, helped his soccer teams to state championships in 2021 and ’22. The Braves won three regional titles in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. The 6-6 Warren had 23 goals and 10 assists in his three seasons on the varsity soccer team.

Warren averaged 39.0 yards per punt as a senior, putting eight of his 24 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. On his 66 kickoffs, 40 went for touchbacks. Warren was 8-for-11 on field goals with a long of 53 yards. For his career, he was 13-for-21 on field goals and 70-for-76 on extra points.
