Indiana women's basketball forward Mackenzie Holmes named AP preseason All-American

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana women's basketball forward Mackenzie Holmes was named to the AP preseason All-American team on Tuesday.

The fifth-year senior is the first Hoosiers player in program history to earn preseason All-American honors. Holmes was voted to the team by a panel of national media members who select the AP Top 25 each week.

Iowa's Caitlin Clark, LSU's Angel Reese, Virginia Tech's Elizabeth Kitley, Stanford's Cameron Brink and UConn's Paige Buckers were selected to the team. Kitley and Holmes tied in the voting for the fifth spot.

Holmes had one of the best seasons in program history last year while helping Indiana win the Big Ten regular season title and a first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

She was second in the Big Ten with 22.3 points per game, led the team with 7.8 rebounds per game and was second in the NCAA with a 6.0 shooting percentage. Holmes was a first-team postseason All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection.

Holmes goes into the 2023-24 season with a chance to break the program's all-time career scoring record set by Tyra Buss (2,364 points). Holmes is currently fourth all-time with 1,987 points. She also has a chance at setting a new career record for field goals made and blocked shots.
