Plainfield 38, Franklin 3

Three takeaways from Class 5A eighth-ranked Plainfield’s 38-3 home win over Franklin.

Play of the game: It did not happen until the outcome was already well decided but Westyn Weyrich’s 41-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter was a beauty. He took the pitch to left, made a defender miss, broke a tackle and then raced up the left sideline for a touchdown. The 2-point conversation pass from Hunter Newell to Caden Vanderbush put the Quakers ahead 38-3 and started the running clock with 9:45 left in the third quarter.

Turning point: Franklin Central was already trailing 7-0, but had the ball and was on the move in Plainfield territory after picking up a third-and-10 on a 12-yard pass to from Clay Pinnick to Alex Leugers. On the next play, Plainfield lineman Seth Martin recovered a fumble. The Quakers then went for a quick strike over the top on a 66-yard pass from Newell to Isaiah Miller to take a 14-0 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter.

Standout performer: There were a lot of standouts on both sides of the ball for the Quakers, who improved to 6-1 and took command again of the Mid-State Conference race. I’m going to go with the senior Newell, who was 14-for-18 passing for 184 yards and two touchdowns. An efficient night. Honorable mention to the Plainfield defense, especially Landon Drennan, Martin and Alex Holsclaw. Those guys can hit. — Kyle Neddenriep

Winning becoming a habit at Plainfield. State-ranked Quakers regain control in Mid-State.

Play of the game: Norvil Tucker's 52-yard rush -- while he was given the ball in the backfield, he evaded multiple defenders and broke tackles to put Carmel on the board.

Player of the game: Mark Zackery does a little bit of everything for the Giants. The two-way player recovered a fumble in the first quarter that led to Ben Davis' field goal, then took a pass 63 yards for a touchdown on the Giants' next drive. — Chloe Peterson

Hamilton Southeastern 43, Noblesville 22

FISHERS – Held scoreless after the first quarter, the Hamilton Southeastern football came alive in the second. The Royals scored 29-unanswered points en route to a 43-22 win on Friday night against rival Noblesville.

The Royals dominated on both sides of the ball. HSE running back tandem of senior Jalen Alexander and junior AZ Wallace combined for five touchdowns and more than 200 yards on the ground.

The win improved the Class 6A, fifth-ranked Royals to 4-1 in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference and 6-1 overall. Noblesville dropped to 1-4 and 3-4.

Play of the game: Already leading 15-8, HSE’s defense helped pad the Royals’ lead. On HSE’s first offensive play, Alexander rushed for the TD to help give his team a 22-8 lead.
