Hudson girls tennis edges Solon in key Suburban League match

Much of the Suburban League knew that Solon would be competitive in its inaugural campaign in the Suburban League National Conference this girls’ tennis season. The Comets are a senior-laden squad, but Hudson survived a close battle.

Behind a 3-2 victory over th Comets, the Explorers moved to a perfect 7-0 record in the SL National in a hard-fought win Sept. 18.

Senior Erica Liu, the Suburban League Co-Player of the Year in 2022, won at first singles 6-1, 6-0 over Ariel Hsieh, a four-year veteran for Solon.

At second singles, junior Mallory Hannan also was a first-team all-league selection last fall. She was a 6-0, 6-2 victor Chahak Gupta.

Sophomore Bransyn Mathia fell 7-7, 6-3 at third singles to another Solon senior, Victoria Dai.

In doubles action, Solon twin sisters Olivia Liu and Isabella Liu defeated Hudson’s standout senior team of Sophie Uijtewaal and Violet Tuttle 6-4, 6-1.

Sarah Matyja, a senior, teamed with junior Aanya Patel at second doubles to post a big win over the Comet crew of Marianne Chang and Sydney Roseman 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

Hudson (13-2 overall) also recently collected a 5-0 conference win at Stow. Liu at first singles was a 6-0, 6-1 victor while Hannan won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, and Mathia earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles.

The first doubles team of Uijtewaal and Tuttle were 6-3, 6-0 winners and the second doubles duo of Matyja and Patel notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

Hudson also has dominant 5-0 wins over league foes Twinsburg, Wadsworth, North Royalton, Nordonia, and Brecksville. In recent non-league play, Hudson featured a big 5-0 win over Walsh Jesuit, plus impressive 3-2 victories over Orange and Kenston.
