What Hubert Davis said after UNC Basketball’s tough road win at Boston College

The North Carolina Tar Heels went to Boston College and got a big win over the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. It was another tough, hard-fought game on the road that came down to a second-half push by the Tar Heels.

But in the end, UNC finds themselves as a winner again moving to 15-3 overall and 7-0 in ACC play.

The Tar Heels did it with a big effort by their rotation as a few different guys made plays near the end to help them hold the lead. They also locked down on the defensive side of the floor, limiting Boston College on that end.

With the win, UNC maintains first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference going into a big game against Wake Forest at home on Monday.

Let’s read what Hubert Davis had to say after his team’s win over the Eagles.

On Ryan, Ingram, Bacot second half surge

“Well, I mean, at the end of the day, you need your dudes to step up. I mean, you just need your big-time players to make big time plays. It’s just as simple as that. So for us to win whoever we play, you know, we need Cormac and Armando, and we need RJ we need Harrison. We need those guys to play well. And in the second half, they stepped up and made plays on both ends of the floor. That helped us win another road game.”

On Armando Bacot playing through foul trouble

“That was just really huge. I was trying to decide what to do, to leave him in. We were thinking about, at that point, we had not doubled (Quinten) Post in the post. And we were thinking about doing that because we just needed Armando in the game. And it just showed, one he didn’t get frustrated with the first half that he had. And he stayed poised and disciplined on the defensive end and continued throughout the game to not get a fourth foul.

“That was huge for us to have him out there. But the free throws, I mean, I just the growth in his free throws. This I mean, it’s just huge. And then that jumper right there at the free throw line and the finish and the foul. I mean, it’s just, Armando was really good today.”

On making free throws in critical times

“Well, it’s a huge part of our game. We always say that we want to dominate points in the paint in three areas. You know, in post penetration and offensive rebounds, and that gives you an opportunity to get fouled and get to the free throw line. We have bigs that can score, down low the post, we’ve got guards that can attack the basket. And that’s an advantage for us. So we want to use it not just to get to the free throw line, but to be able to score.

“Especially when, you know, I don’t think we shot the ball particularly well. I mean, 29 percent from three, it goes back to the same thing again. Are you defending? Are you rebounding? Are you taking care of the basketball? And in the second half, we checked all three of those boxes.”

On winning ugly

“When we needed to get a stop, we got to stop. When we needed to get a rebound, we got to rebound. When we needed to score, we got the ball into the right hands, and they were able to score. We always talk about how you’re going to react and how you’re going to respond when good and bad things happen. And that’s the only thing that you have control over. And I was really proud of how our team reacted and responded.

“And, you know, in the second half, we only had two turnovers. Made 17 of the last 18 free throws, it’s the eighth straight game that we’ve out rebounded an opponent, and we just got to do a better job of defending without fouling. But I thought, our initial (play), getting stops was really good. And just, again, just really proud of the guys.”

On James Okonkwo

“Yes, he is. I told him yesterday after practice, I just love the way that he’s improving and working hard and practicing. And you guys asked me a question, I think it was yesterday about J-Wit and him feeling more comfortable. And so, everybody’s feeling more comfortable. I mean, we didn’t get James until the latter part of the summer. So like, his progression was later than the other transfers. And so just, you know, in terms of terminology, new school, new system, his growth and you know, it just has continued to get better. And it gave me the confidence to be able to call this number tonight.”
