CSN goes 5-0 at Wildcat Invite

Alicia MacIntyre Ewerth saw the potential her team could have this season all the way back in August in preseason workouts.

The young but hungry CSN squad wanted to get better on a daily basis, led in part by a group of juniors and seniors that saw the Seahawks succeed immensely when they were freshmen and sophomores.

Community School went a perfect 5-0 at the Wildcat Invite Saturday, beating Gulf Coast, Canterbury, Bishop Verot, Cape Coral, and Mariner to extend their win streak to seven in a row, their longest win streak since the 2021 season.

“When we talked in August, I said we were working towards October,” MacIntyre Ewerth said. “Tomorrow’s October, and I’m feeling good about where we are. We’ve really built their confidence as a team. They play separate all over the place, but coming together as a team and working for each other. Today, that’s what I saw. They really came together.

The Seahawks successfully vanquished Bishop Verot, a team that capitalized on their mistakes in the Private 8 third-place game earlier in September. CSN then snapped a two-game losing streak to Canterbury, winning in three sets over the Cougars. In the Seahawks’ last 10 games against the Cougars, they’re 8-2 dating back to 2019.

CSN has managed to compete in at least one set against top notch competition locally, threatening No. 1 Seacrest in a 29-27 loss in the first set. The Seahawks also took a set from No. 2 Barron Collier while losing another 25-23, showing that the team can hang with virtually everyone. CSN is 6-4 against ranked teams inside The News-Press/Naples Daily News poll so far this season.

Led by Kelly McAuley offensively, the team continues to make strides with younger players in Mia Ringhofer, Sophia Baer, Trinity McCormick, and Lizzy Robinson among others. MacIntyre Ewerth feels as if this team is not far off from becoming a playoff team in a highly competitive district that includes First Baptist, Canterbury, and Bishop Verot.

“I think that a lot of that has to do with talking with our leaders about what their teammates need,” MacIntyre Ewerth said. “And making it more about we as unit instead of me as a player, and how I can help my team. They’ve really bought into that. That’s really hard after a 29-27 loss to Seacrest, coming back from that. From then to now, we’ve really grown as a unit.

“That’s really all I’m focused on the next couple of weeks. I think we have the skills. We just need to come together and work for each other. That’s what we did today.”

Gulf Coast's Kate Drasba goes for a tip in the Gold Division Championship game of the Wildcat Invite against CSN.

Gulf Coast showed life under first-year coach John Alvarez, defeating First Baptist, Estero, Gateway, and Palmetto Ridge before falling to the Seahawks for the second time in four days. In the eight sets played between the Sharks and the Seahawks this year, CSN scored 151 points to Gulf Coast’s 150.

Having a sizable senior class of Marina Rau, Kiley Stone, Casey Williams, Kate Drasba, Brooke Pierce, and Ashlyn Callan has made things easier for younger role players like Juliette Van Wagner, Sophia Schultz, Cassandra Maldonado, and Ella Hazelett. The Sharks are just three wins away from matching their win total from all of last season, an encouraging sign for the program moving forward.

“We’re on the heavier end of our schedule, playing more competitive teams,” Alvarez said. “I mentioned it earlier, outcome is nice, but the only outcome I’m concerned with is the last game of the season. We keep making adjustments, we keep making little changes, and it’s working out well. I think everybody is doing a bunch of good things, and we keep going. We keep tweaking until we get that happy place that’s consistent.

The game against FBA, I want to find something to pick on as a negative, but we were doing everything right. We came out slow against a good CSN team and then we turned it on and we played. I really think those teams in our bracket were evenly matched up. It could’ve gone to us, Canterbury, CSN, or FBA. It’s good. I think we’re where we want to be right now, and we keep moving forward.”

Canterbury's Charlotte Laquis (7) goes for a kill on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Wildcat Invite, held at the Estero Rec Center.
Canterbury's Charlotte Laquis (7) goes for a kill on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Wildcat Invite, held at the Estero Rec Center.

Canterbury was unable to finish down the stretch, starting 3-0 in pool play before going 0-2 in bracket play with losses to Community School and First Baptist. The Cougars are 12-8 with regular season contests against Cardinal Mooney, Bishop Verot, and Gulf Coast on the docket before district play commences.

In the Silver Division, Bishop Verot took control and defeated Estero for the title, winning 25-18, 22-25, 19-17. The Wildcats were up 14-11 in the third set, but could not close the door on the Vikings despite having multiple chances to do so.

After going 4-1 Saturday, Verot is now 17-4 under first-year coach Christy Curtis, as the Vikings lead all of Southwest Florida in wins up to this point. The team will have Gateway Charter, First Baptist, Canterbury, and LaBelle to close out the regular season before district play commences on Oct. 16.

Arguably the greatest rivalry in all of Southwest Florida, Bishop Verot and Fort Myers played for the first time in six years on Saturday, snapping a lengthy drought since the schools last saw each other. The rivalry was halted by school administrators in April 2018, but Saturday’s tournament pitted the two against each other in bracket play in the Silver Division.

“Going 4-1, that’s pretty good for an all day Saturday tournament,” Curtis said. “We had the chance to get some girls playing time who hadn’t gotten a lot, which was good for us because we need to get them work. It’s good for us to play some teams we haven’t played in a while, We haven’t gotten to play Fort Myers since 2017, so that was fun for the girls to play them.”

As for whether or not the rivalry returns full time, Curtis hopes that the Vikings and Green Wave facing off becomes a recurring theme once again for those students who have missed out on those memorable rivalry games for the entirety of their times in high school.

“I guess they should,” Curtis said. “The kids want it.”
