HS Roundup: CSN's Charlotte Norman Class A diving champ; Verot sweeps district cross country

Here is a roundup of district, regional, and state championship action for Southwest Florida teams played the week of Oct. 30-Nov. 4

SATURDAY

Class 1A State Championship Swimming

Community School of Naples diver Charlotte Norman easily won the 1-meter diving championship. Her 523.60 score was 100 points more than second place Alexiya Downer's 423.95.

Nick Fabian also made the podium for the Seahawks by taking third in the 500 free in 4:31.26 and seventh place in the 200 free in 1:41.05. He also helped the CSN 400 free relay, along with Carson Feehery, Egor Kuznetsov, and Christian McAuley, take fifth in 3:13.96 and the 200 free relay place 10th.

Kuznetsov took 10th in the 100 free (47.56) and Feehery placed 11th in the 100 fly (51.32).

Class 2A-District 6 Boys Cross Country

Bishop Verot won the Class 2A-District 6 boys cross country championship after sweeping the podium. Andrew Marino (16:43.5) took home gold for the Vikings, while Dennis Olsen (17:00.2) and Zachary Ziekle (17:04.1) earned silver and bronze, respectively.

Here are the teams that qualified for regionals, as well as top performers and individuals moving on to regional play.

Class 2A-District 6 Girls Cross Country

Bishop Verot won the girls' Class 2A-District 6 cross country championship after posting a team score of 38. Three Viking runners finished inside the top 10, led by Mackenzie De Lisle’s (18:03.4) second-place finish.

Oasis’ Jazlyn Forbes (18:28.2) finished third for the Sharks, while Vikings Gianna Gyurich (19:47.4) and Caroline Muddell (20:06.9) finished fourth and sixth, respectively.

Here are the teams advancing to regionals, as well as top finishers and individual qualifiers that punched their ticket to regional action.

FRIDAY

Class 2A State Championship Swimming

Area teams competed in the Class 2A Swimming and Diving Championship on Friday night. Lely's Caelen Burt produced the highest finishes among area swimmers, earning silver in the 50 free (23.66) and bronze in the 100 free (51.47).

Lily Drons picked up a seventh place finish for the Estero girls in the 100 free (52.50), as well as an 11th place finish in the 200 free (1:58.23). Katia Bushko added a sixth place finish in the 500 free (5:11.59) for the WIldcats.

Nathan Somers finished ninth in the 200 free (1:46.38) for the Wildcats, while Giovanni Medina ninth place in the 500 free (4:47.61). Nicholas Kirby added an 11th place finish in the 200 free (1:47.54).

The Barron Collier girls earned a ninth place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:55.06), as well as 11th in the 200 free relay (1:43.93) and in the 400 free relay (3:50.32). Nicole Kuhl (292.20) placed 15th in the 1m dive.

The Barron Collier boys finished fourth in the 400 free relay (3:15.34), and 10th in the 200 medley relay (1:39.87). Emil Daniyar placed ninth in the 100 fly (52.28), while Charlie Wu earned a 10th place finish in the 100 breast (1:00.52). Christopher Warnken added a 10th place finish in the 50 free (22.10).

Aubrey Rogers finished 12th in the 200 medley relay.

THURSDAY

Class 1A-District 6 Cross Country

Tyler Mastrangelo, Sienna Audrey, and the girls of CSN delivered early birthday presents to coach Kasye Beza with individual and a team title at the Class 1A District 6 cross country championships on the campus of SFCA Thursday morning.

Audrey left little doubt about who would win the girls individual title rocketing out from the start and opening a massive lead after the first half mile.

Her efforts helped lead the Seahawk squad to a narrow victory over Out-of-Door Academy with an assist from teammate Hannah Hagenbuckle who finished third.

“We practice to try to win and they pulled it off,” said Beza who celebrates her birthday on Monday.

For Audrey it was a step to her ultimate goal. “Top five, maybe first or second,” said Audrey when asked about the State meet.

Mastrangelo had to do a little more work to secure the victory. He was shadowed through the first half of the race by Elliot Anderson of SFCA and Declan Fiorucci from Out-of-Door.

A decisive move halfway through the race secured the individual victory and helped his team to a third place finish and a spot at Region.

“I was really trying to win this race. It’s been on my mind the last two and a half to three weeks,” said Mastrangelo.

Eight teams qualify through to Region. Area teams joining CSN will be Village School, St. John Neumann, SFCA, Donahue Academy, Canterbury and Maco Island Academy.

The local boys team qualifiers along with CSN are SFCA, FBA, Canterbury, and Donahue Academy.

These teams compete in a week at Holloway Park in Lakeland for to qualify for the State Championships.

Class 4A-District 4 Boys Cross Country

Palmetto Ridge placed second at the Class 4A-District 4 championship with a team score of 60, behind a first overall finish from Hayden Clark (15:49.2). Jayden Saint-Paul (16:27.5) added a sixth place finish for the Bears, while teammate Marcus Castrillo-Perales (16:31.7) placed eighth.

Class 4A-District 4 Girls Cross Country

Lehigh's Gianna Del-Pizzo earned gold at the Class 4A-District 4 district championship after crossing in 18:04.5.

Palmetto Ridge earned a spot in the regional final after placing eighth with a team score of 191. Samantha Strahle (19:54.9) led the Bears with her 12th place finish, while teammate Addison Johnson (21:30.1) finished 36th.

Boys State Championship Bowling

Fort Myers fell in the state championship semifinal to Leesburg 3-2, before losing to eventual state champions Circle Christian in the consolation bracket championship 3-0.

Daniel Lynn finished in fourth place as an individual for Cape Coral after making a run in the consolation bracket. He fell to Rhode Barber 2-0 in the consolation semifinal.

Girls State Championship Bowling

Oasis defeated Village School 3-0 in the consolation bracket, before falling to Seabreeze in the fifth round of the bracket 3-1. Cape Coral lost to Heritage 3-1 in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

Katarina Hagler finished fourth as an individual for Oasis after falling to Emily Street 2-0. Cape Coral's Brooke Pabst fell in the third round of the consolation bracket to Madison Bailey, 2-0.

WEDNESDAY

Class 3A-District 6 Boys Cross Country

Naples won the Class 3A-District 6 boys cross country district championship with a team score of 40. Hector Toro (15:41.4) finished first overall for the Golden Eagles. Teammates Matthew Damouni (16:11.7) and Reece Lolly (16:17.4) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Michael Brewer (16:30.7) also placed inside the top-10 with his eighth place finish.

Here are the complete team qualifiers for the state championship, as well top performers and individuals who punched their ticket to the regional final.

Naples earned the Class 3A-District 6 girls cross country championship after posting a team score of 32. Tara Watkins (19:22.6) led the Golden Eagles with her second place finish, while teammate Emily Schaab (19:46.4) added a fourth place finish to the winning effort.

Masha Dorofeev (19:02.7) finished first overall for Fort Myers, who placed second as a team with a score of 106.

Here are the teams who advanced to the regional final, as well as top finishers and individuals who earned a spot in the regional championship.

Boys Bowling State Championship

Fort Myers advanced to state semifinal after defeating Merritt Island, Bayside, and Hagerty. In the opening round, the Green Wave defeated Merritt Island 3-1, before downing Bayside 3-2. Fort Myers went on to handle business against Hagerty in the quarterfinal 3-1, and will face Leesburg for a shot at the state title.

Cape Coral fell in the first round to Bayside 3-0, and again in the first round of the consolation bracket to Merritt Island, 3-1.

Girls Bowling State Championship

Oasis fell in the first round 3-0 to Titusville, but keeps their championship hopes alive with a 3-0 win over East Ridge, and 3-1 win over Palm Bay in the consolation bracket.

Cape Coral defeated Lake Mary 3-2 before falling to Seabreeze 3-0 in the second round. They found their footing in the consolation bracket as well, defeating Park Vista 3-2 before moving past Winter Park 3-1.

TUESDAY

Class 1A-Region 3 Girls Golf

Community School of Naples won the Class 1A-Region 3 girls' golf tournament after finishing with a team score of 304.

Isabella Michetti (73) placed fourth and Reilly Kirwin (73) sixth to lead the Seahawks.

Bishop Verot also earned their spot in the state tournament after finishing second with a team score of 305.

Amelia Loninger (71) finished in second place as an individual for the Vikings, while Samantha Loninger (73) finished fifth. Morgan Franklin (76) added a 12th-place finish for Bishop Verot.

First Baptist placed third with a team score of 325. Eva Lye (70) finished first overall for the Lions.

Class 1A-Region 3 Boys Golf

St. John Neumann finished in third place in the Class 1A-Region 3 boys golf tournament, carding a team score of 297.

Connor Shea (72) led the Celtics with his fifth-place finish, while Callahan Seeber (73) finished eighth.

Bishop Verot (311) finished in seventh place behind Easton Green's (74), placing ninth. Community School of Naples finished 10th after posting a team score of 319.

Class 2A-Region 4 Boys Golf

Barron Collier finished second as a team in the Region 2A-4 championship on Tuesday.

Barron Collier advanced to the state tournament after finishing second in the Class 2A-Region 4 boys golf tournament with a team score of 282.

Braden Miller led the Cougars with his 68 to tie for third, while Matthew Gerstemeier (69) finished 11th.

Gulf Coast finished in fifth place as a team after carding a 291. Ryan Miller (69) and Chris Forsythe (69) tied for ninth place. Senior Aidan Tipple had a hole-in-one on the 162-yard par-3 fifth hole.

Estero placed seventh with a team score of 303, led by JD Dintino's (71) 14th-place finish.

Fort Myers finished 10th with a team score of 321, while Cape Coral (367) finished 11th, and Mariner (372) finished 12th.

MONDAY

Class 2A Region 4 Girls Golf

American Heritage Plantation won the Class 2A-Region 4 girls golf tournament after posting a team score of 298. Jensen Beach (324) finished second, while American Heritage Palm Beach (337) finished third as a team.

Barron Collier (354) led area teams with a fifth-place finish, while Gulf Coast (357) followed closely behind in sixth place. Estero (366) finished seventh, while Fort Myers (389) finished ninth. North Fort Myers (496) placed 11th, and LaBelle (522) rounded out the team scores in 12th place.

Madison Roach (74) finished in fifth place, and will move onto the state championship tournament as an individual. Teammate Sara Vitasek (76) will join Roach after finished T6.

Class 3A-Region 3 Girls Golf

Ida Baker's Gia Serrano finished tied for 23rd after carding a 91.
