Howell no-hitter highlights day of pitching gems in Livingston County

Sophomore Nick Hoorn has made a name for himself as Howell’s leading hitter, but the biggest moment so far in his high school baseball career came on the pitcher’s mound.

On a day featuring great pitching performances in Livingston County, Hoorn threw a no-hitter for the Highlanders Monday in a 2-0 victory over Canton.

The Chiefs’ only two base runners reached on errors. Hoorn struck out 10 batters in seven innings and didn’t issue a walk, throwing only 77 pitches in going the distance. Of those pitches, 55 were strikes.

Hoorn is batting a team-leading .395. As a pitcher, he’s 5-0 with a 1.52 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 32⅓ innings. He’s walked only nine batters.

Howell (19-10) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when a double by Andrew Hiller scored Owen Elsey, who had a two-out single. The Highlanders’ other run scored in the sixth when courtesy runner Brett Parris scored when an error was committed on a bunt by Landon Allen.

Brighton 6, Plymouth 0

Easton Storey pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 for his second straight shutout. Storey hasn’t allowed a run in his last four outings, giving up five hits and fanning 39 in 19 innings. He’s lowered his ERA to 1.73.

Conner Prahl was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Evan Larson and Jack Storey were each 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Bulldogs (18-7).

Hartland 2, Novi 0

Gavin Nash pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven for Hartland (17-7). Nash is 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA.

The Eagles’ runs scored on a double by Sam Clay in the first inning and a double by Gannon Grundman in the third.

After being denied a potential winning rally by a great defensive play in the first game, Pinckney came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second game. The Pirates (11-13) scored twice in the top of the seventh, with singles by Talon Koppmann and Jonny Hoffman delivering the runs.

Landen Bauer gave up three runs in the first, but settled down and didn’t allow a run in his final 4⅔ innings. Nolan Carruthers pitched 1⅓ innings of no-hit scoreless ball.

In the first game, Chelsea first baseman Luke Anstead made a diving stop on a hard ball hit down the line by Carruthers to end the game with the tying run on second base.

Boys lacrosse

Hartland 16, Livonia 1

Hartland won its sixth consecutive KLAA championship with yet another blowout in the league’s title game.

The Eagles have outscored five opponents 81-13 in the league’s championship crossover game during that streak. There wasn’t a title game in 2018 when Hartland went 8-0 in league play.

Dylan Ayotte had six goals and one assist, Jacob Ross had three goals and four assists, Drew Lockwood had three goals and one assist, Jake Lewis had two goals and one assist, and Joey Mattord scored twice for the Eagles.

Livonia trailed only 2-1 after one quarter before Hartland extended its lead to 9-1 by halftime and 12-1 through three quarters.

Howell 6, Canton 1

Nolan Hudnut stopped 13 out of 14 shots for Howell (13-4), which begins state tournament play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Birmingham Seaholm.

Ryan Tedesco had three goals and two assists. Thomas Haataja, Marshall Chambers and Sam Edwards scored Howell’s other goals. Gage Overton had five ground balls and five takeaways on defense.

Girls lacrosse

Hartland 20, Livonia 6

Hartland won its first KLAA championship since 2019, while Livonia lost in the final by a lopsided margin to a Livingston County team for the fourth straight season.

Ava Gilardone had five goals and two assists, Koey Merenuk had five goals, and Madeline Turcotte had four goals and two assists for Hartland.

Claire Pielack made 10 saves for the Eagles.

Softball

Hartland 12, Clarkston 0

Clarkston 7, Hartland 6 (8)

Tenth-ranked Hartland (22-2-1) lost for only the second time when Clarkston scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kate McIntyre was 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs in the first game and 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the second game for the Eagles.

Kylie Swierkos pitched a five-inning shutout in the opener, striking out nine and allowing two hits.

Golf

North Star Bank

Brighton topped a strong 25-team field by shooting 299 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield.

Rochester Adams was second with a 306, Howell ninth with a 330 and Hartland 15th with a 341.

Brighton senior Andrew Daily finished first among 125 players, shooting 2-under-par 70.

Riley Morton was fourth with a 73, Winston Lerch tied for fifth with a 74 and Matt Doyle tied for 39th with an 82 to complete Brighton’s score.

Zach Spencer tied for fifth with a 74 and Hayden Sturos tied for 27th with an 80 to lead Howell. Brady Betteley tied for 35th with an 81 for Hartland.

Soccer

Pinckney 1, Chelsea 1

Ella Swiderski scored off an assist from Zaryah Griffin, as Pinckney completed SEC White play with a 9-0-1 record.

The Pirates will take a 38-game unbeaten streak in division play into next season, having won four straight league titles. They are 36-0-2 since losing 4-1 at Chelsea on April 30, 2019.
