Hortonville standout shot put and discus thrower Ben Smith leads area track and field athletes in the first installment of the Post-Crescent honor roll.

The honor roll was compiled from statewide track leaders on athletic.net. The state's top performer is listed along with any area athletes in the top 25 listed on athletic.net, regardless of division.

Smith, who is a two-time defending WIAA Division 1 state champ in the shot put, leads the event again this year with a throw of 67 feet, 7 inches. He also has the top discus throw (208-11).

Kaukauna's Brady Hoffer leads the state high jump field with a leap of 6-7 with Clintonville's Sam Wegener tops in the long jump (23-3.75).

Winneconne leads state golf coaches rankings

Winneconne is the No.1-ranked team in Division 2 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin rankings.

The Wolves lead three area teams in the top 10 in D2, which includes Seymour (No. 7) and Xavier (No. 8).

Area softball, baseball and girls soccer rankings

Here is the fourth edition of the softball, baseball and girls soccer rankings for the Appleton area. Records are through this past weekend's games.

SOFTBALL

1, Kaukauna (13-0): Opponents have scored just seven runs against the Ghosts all season. The team's incredible win streak hits 94 after blowout wins this past week over Appleton East (15-0), Oshkosh North (7-1), Appleton North (11-0) and Germantown (5-0).

2, New London (11-1): Bulldogs suffer first defeat of season Thursday in 9-6 loss to Seymour. Team plays six games this week, including three at Winneconne Invite on Saturday.

3, Freedom (10-3): Irish split doubleheader with Denmark last Thursday and have won four of their last five games. Team has key North Eastern Conference game against Fox Valley Lutheran on Tuesday before Division 2 state title rematch against New London on Saturday at Winneconne Invite.

4, Neenah (6-4): Rockets get no-hit performance from ace pitcher Kyleigh Mathe in 4-0 victory over Oshkosh West on Friday.

5, Hortonville (10-6): Polar Bears claw back into top five with back-to-back wins over Kimberly (12-0) and Oshkosh North (6-5), with a home game against Kaukauna on Tuesday.

Also: Fox Valley Lutheran (10-4), Seymour (9-6), Kimberly (8-6), Chilton (7-3), Manawa (9-5), Menasha (9-6).

BASEBALL

1, Kimberly (10-1): Kimberly suffers first loss of season in 12-11 setback to Neenah on Friday. Team will look to rebound with games at Hortonville (Tuesday) and Appleton West (Thursday) before rematch at home against Neenah on Friday.

2, Appleton North (9-2): Lightning win streak hits seven. Alex Ramus is batting .395 and leads the team with 14 RBI.

3, Shiocton (7-1): Chiefs have one loss on the season, a 1-0 defeat at Bonduel. Team has eclipsed the 20-run mark twice in wins against Tigerton (23-2) and Menominee Indian (29-1).

4, Neenah (7-4): Rockets move up rankings after Hortonville drops out. Team started 1-3 but has won six of its last seven games, including a 12-11 victory over Kimberly on Friday.

5, Little Chute (9-2): North Eastern Conference-leading Mustangs crack top five and are on seven-game winning streak, including back-to-back 3-0 victories over Wrightstown last week.

Also: Menasha (7-2), Hortonville (6-6), Wrightstown (7-5), Kaukauna (4-4), Chilton (7-6), Freedom (7-5), Brillion (9-3), Fox Valley Lutheran (7-7).

GIRLS SOCCER

1, Kimberly (9-1-0): Team is on eight-game winning streak and may have best 1-2 scoring punch in state with Senah Hanes (16 goals) and Emily McCarthy (14).

2, Appleton East (8-0-1): Undefeated Patriots turning heads in the Fox Valley Association and are tied with Papermakers atop the conference with 3-0 records.

3, Appleton North (4-2-1): Lightning holds steady at No. 3 and has just two losses, both by one goal, to Bay Port (2-1) and Kimberly (1-0).

4, St. Mary Catholic (5-1-2): Zephyrs' lone loss came to Ozaukee/Random Lake on April 18.

5, Neenah (3-2-1): Rockets have tough games this week at home against Kimberly on Monday and against Brookfield East on Saturday.
