Horseheads adds four to Athletic Hall of Fame

The Horseheads Athletic Hall of Fame grew by four with the inductions of longtime coach Steve Monks and athletes Amanda Schiefen, Laura Keating and Mark Moore.

They were honored during an induction dinner Sept. 28 at Tonino's in Horseheads.

The inductees were again recognized Sept. 29 at halftime of the Horseheads varsity football game against Elmira at Horseheads High School.

Laura Keating

The 2004 Horseheads graduate was point guard for the 2001-02 Horseheads girls basketball team that advanced to the Class A state final.

Keating was part of three sectional championships in basketball and two regional titles. She finished with 903 career points and her 324 assists are the most for the program over the last 25 years. Keating played college basketball at Roberts Wesleyan and Utica College.

Keating played four years of lacrosse and helped the Blue Raiders to two Section 4 championships. She ranked second on the program's career scoring list.

Steve Monks

He coached the Horseheads boys basketball team to 248 victories and eight Section 4 championship games in 24 seasons before retiring in 2013. That included a Section 4 title in 2000, when the Blue Raiders won a state regional game for the first time in program history.

Under Monks, Horseheads won six division titles in the old Sullivan Trail Conference and five in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference West Division.

Monks also taught physical education in the Horseheads School District and coached lacrosse. He retired as a teacher in 2017.

Mark Moore

Moore graduated from Horseheads in 1982 after earning nine varsity letters in golf, basketball and lacrosse. He was named Most Valuable Player of each team as a senior and was Horseheads' first lacrosse All-American after scoring 72 points as a senior and 188 for his career.

He was named Male Athlete of the Year by the Elmira Kiwanis Club as a senior. He was an all-league basketball selection twice.

Moore played on four NCAA Division III championship teams at Hobart College, where he was a co-captain and All-American in 1986.

Amanda Schiefen

Schiefen, a 2015 Horseheads grad, tallied 1,194 points and 647 rebounds during a five-year varsity basketball career, helping the Blue Raiders to three Section 4 titles and one STAC tournament crown.

She is one of three girls in program history to score more than 1,000 points. Schiefen was a two-time all-state pick and played four seasons for Division I Canisius College.

Schiefen helped Horseheads to four Section 4 championships in volleyball.
