Hornell boys soccer starts season strong with home win over Dansville

The Hornell Red Raiders rolled to a 7-2 win over the Dansville Mustangs in their season opener Wednesday night at Maple City Park.

Hornell’s Eric Ross scored the first goal of the season off a cross from Jack Emo just 75 seconds into the game. Emo followed with another quick goal from 15 yards out to put the Raiders up 2-0 in the first five minutes of play. 

The Red Raiders held control for the majority of the game and rounded out the first half of play up 3-0 after a goal by Wyatt Evingham with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The Red Raiders held control for the majority of the game and rounded out the first half of play up 3-0 after a goal by Wyatt Evingham with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Coming out strong in the second half, Hornell scored another string of goals starting with Jack Emo’s rocket about 14 minutes into the half. Marco Picco followed with his first goal of the season just three minutes later, and Gennaro Picco was in a perfect position to score after a corner kick with 21 minutes left on the clock.

Eric Ross rounded out Hornell’s scoring run with his second goal with just under 8 minutes left in the game.

The Dansville Mustangs scored two quick goals in the second half. Down 6-0 with 20 minutes to play, Thomas Adams scored the team’s first goal followed quickly by a successful shot from Jacob Kreiley. 

Hornell kept the Mustang defense busy with 49 shots on goal. Dansville’s goalkeeper, Cameron Delaney, earned 15 saves on the night.

Hornell lineup features mix of returning starters, newcomers

After a Section V finals appearance and being named LCAA Division I Champions last year, the Red Raiders lost 10 seniors and had some big shoes to fill in the starting lineup.

Davin Oyer has taken over in goal, and returning starters Jack Emo, Gennaro Picco, Wyatt Evingham, and PJ Picco were joined with Eric Ross, Andrew Davis, Kevin Regan, Marco Picco, Demayne Dixon and Cody Cardamone on the field to start the game.

“It was a great start to our season,” said head coach Jim Tobin after the game. “We have a lot of potential this year. We need to continue to work had to reach our potential.”

The Red Raiders are on the road Tuesday, Sept. 4 as they take on Pavilion/York at Pavilion High School at 6:30 p.m.
