Holt's Emma Cadwell rallies to emerge as Division 1 bowling state champion

Holt sophomore Emma Cadwell overcame a big deficit in the championship match to conclude her season as the Division 1 state champion Saturday at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Cadwell trailed by 58 pins after rolling an opening game of 158 before following that with a game of 204 to edge Flushing’s Hannah Reid by three pins for the title.

Cadwell, who finished eighth in qualifying, also had narrow wins in her quarterfinal and semifinal matches in bracket play. Cadwell beat L’Anse Creuse North’s Haley Streatmans by six pins in the quarterfinal and Zeeland East’s Brianna Fortney by six pins in the semifinal.

Holt’s Madison Rue also qualified for match play after taking 15th in qualifying. She fell in the opening round to Flushing’s Reid, who was the No. 2 seed.

DIVISION 2

Charlotte junior Lori Jackson was the lone area bowler to reach match play after finishing 15th in qualifying with a total of 1,102 before falling in the quarterfinals. Jackson knocked off No. 2 seed Phoene Fisk of Cedar Springs, 414-373. She was knocked off in the quarterfinal by Livonia Clarenceville’s Caitlyn Johnson, who finished as the state champion.

Mason senior Olyvia Mollitor finished three pins shy of reaching match play and finished 17th with a six-game qualifying total of 1,098. Mason junior Avery Beach was 21st and had a total of 1,072.

DIVISION 3

Olivet senior Olivia Krauss placed 14th in qualifying before being edged by Madison Heights Bishop Foley’s Jacey Thibodeau. Krauss fell by four pins to Thibodeau.

DIVISION 4

Pewamo-Westphalia’s Kennedy Cassel tied for 10th in qualifying to reach match play before falling in the opening round at Northway Lanes.

Portland St. Patrick’s Isabella Russman finished 22nd in qualifying with a six-game mark of 1,012.

BOYS

DIVISION 1

Holt senior Nick Schaberg concluded his career by reaching the quarterfinals of the singles finals at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Schaberg fell 435-407 in his quarterfinal matchup to Utica Eisenhower’s Dylan Hamden, who went on to finish as the state champion. Schaberg finished third during qualifying with a six-game total of 1,289 and then won his opening match over Macomb Dakota’s Landen Moore, 492-434.

DIVISION 2

Mason junior Daniel Barth had the top performance to lead area bowlers. Barth finished 11th in qualifying to reach bracket play before falling in the opening round.

Owosso junior Camden Caswell just missed reaching bracket play, finishing 17th in qualifying. Caswell had a pin total of 1,160 and missed out on bracket play by four pins.

DIVISION 3

Lakewood senior Phillip Butler reached match play before suffering an opening-round loss to Frankenmuth’s Mayson Knop, who went on to become the individual state champion. Butler was seventh in qualifying with a six-game mark of 1,229.

Portland’s Dre Cross was the next best area finisher, placing 30th in qualifying.
