The night went far from planned for the Hoggard High School football team in Saturday's NCHSAA state championship loss to Weddington, but one Viking player made history.

Quarterback Hudson Wilharm - who threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns in loss - set the new single-season passing record (2,857) at Hoggard as he completed 17 of 31 passes on the night.

"I couldn't attribute that more to my team than myself," Wilharm said of achieving the feat. "I've been set up by coaches, linemen, receivers, just helping me make plays as well. It's not the ending we want, of course, but to make it back from last year, with all the adversity we handled, it's definitely a great feeling."

Wilharm earned the starting quarterback job at Hoggard last season as a junior, but broke his collarbone in Week 8. While the Vikings stilled earned a playoff win in 2022, the season was greatly dampened by the loss.

The senior broke the previously held record of 2,836 passing yards, set by Josh Jones in 2017. Wilharm finished 2023 completing 217 of 329 passes for 33 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also scored on the ground in the win, showing off his speed on a 65-yard score.

"It's just coaches and players setting me up for success," he said. "All you got to do is read the hole and go, so I mean, it's not really me. It's about my team."

Wilharm, who received a preferred walk-on offer from N.C. State earlier this week, says his senior season is one to remember.

"It's meant the world to me," the senior said of his squad this fall. "I wouldn't trade our group for any other team in the state or the country. I've had such a great time this year; all the memories are just irreplaceable."
