Hilton jumps in Class AA: Section V teams in latest NYS girls basketball rankings

Twenty-one Section V girls basketball teams were mentioned in last week's New York state rankings.

The same 21 remain this week, as the updated list was published Tuesday by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Among the teams included, there was little movement. The biggest adjustment came in Class AA, where Hilton jumped from No. 9 to No. 4.

The Cadets won each of their two games last week: An impressive 74-42 victory over previously undefeated Victor, followed by a 51-46 win over reigning Class AA state champion Webster Schroeder.

"This group competes every night, but they do it every day in practice too," Hilton coach David Heise said. "They compete in every drill. They’re gritty and willing to take on all challenges."

One Section V team to watch down the stretch run

Despite reaching the Section V Class AA championship game last year, Penfield has not made an appearance in the state rankings so far this season.

A slow start to 2023-24 was somewhat anticipated. The Patriots lost two all-state selections from last year (guards Jackie Funk and Grace Alexander) to graduation, while returning starter Ashley Kalvitis missed the start of the season due to a knee injury.

Now Kalvitis is back in the lineup after making her debut last Friday against Brighton, and can solidify a roster that's excelled in January. Penfield (7-5) has won five straight games, which includes a victory over Hilton on Jan. 5.

Following a loss to state-ranked Aquinas on Dec. 21, Penfield coach Mark Vogt said he hoped his team would peak in February.

The Patriots are well on their way.

"We just grind and we just fight," Vogt said. "We just want to take one step forward and get a little better every day, and play well as a team. We want to be the team that nobody wants to play."
