Hillsdale Academy girls track team wins MITCA D4 team state; Colts boys place second

After winning in 2021 and 2023, the Hillsdale Academy girls track team added another MITCA team title to their collection. The Colts won the Division 4 state championship meet with a final score of 1,492 points. They defeated second place Gobles and third place Frankfort to win the 2024 championship.

Junior Caroline Roberts had the team's lone individual win, taking first place in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 27.10 seconds. Teammates Audrey Nehlsen (2:36.91) and Elizabeth Caspar (2:37.75) took seventh and ninth respectively.

The Colts were also strong in the hurdles events. Lucy Cote took second in the 300 hurdles at 49.36, followed by Madison Sallows (3rd, 50.81) and Zoe Plemmons (fourth, 52.82).

Cote took third in the 100 hurdles (17.07); Sallows was fifth (17.57) and Plemmons seventh (17.62).

Ruth Brownlee took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:28.80, a new PR. Ella Walton (eighth, 5:38.92) and Allie Miller (ninth, 5:40.74) also had new PR times.

Walton took fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 12:30.67. Ruth Brownlee took seventh with a time of 12:47.17 and Abby Brownlee took eighth with a time of 12:49.53.

Senior Angela Alvarez was third in the 400 at 1:01.54 and eighth in the 200 at 27.75. Both were new personal bests.

Georgia Whalen was seventh in the 400 (1:05.01).

Senior Iris Millies took ninth in the 100 at 13.40 and 10th in the 200 at 28.07.

Senior Evie Gray took second place in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 3 1/2 inches, a new PR. Gray took third in the discus event with a throw of 97-8.

Julia Caspar took eighth in high jump with a height of 4-6. Senior Natalie Spielman finished 10th overall with a height of 4-feet, 4 inches.

Millies finished fourth in the pole vault event at 9 feet. Anne Gray took sixth, clearing 8 feet. Ruth Brownlee took 10th at 7 feet. Haven Socha took seventh in the long jump (14-4).

The team is now conference, regional and MITCA team state champions.

The 4x100 team took third overall. The team of Haven Socha, Sallows, Cote and Alvarez ran a 52.70. Socha, Caspar, Sallows and Millies took fourth in the 4x200 with a time of 1:53.06. Socha, Cote, Roberts and Alvarez took first place in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:11.23. Miller, Walton, Nehlsen and Roberts took first place in the 4x800 with a time of 9:50.78.

Pittsford girls track takes seventh at MITCA

The Colts will continue their yearly competition with in-county rival Pittsford at this year's MHSAA state finals, but before that the Pittsford Wildcats qualified to compete at MITCA this season. They took second to the Colts last season.

This year, they took seventh overall with a final points total of 946.

Junior Ana Camila Salazar took 15th in the 200 with a new PR time of 28.77. Junior Karlee Embach took 10th overall in the 400 with a time of 1:07.10. Teammate Halle Clark took 13th with a time of 1:07.61.

Senior Brooke Smith took second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200. The senior distance runner had a PR time of 5:27.46 in the 1,600 and a season-record time of 12:19.35 in the 3,200. Teammate Riley McCumber took 14th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:55.70. McCumber took 11th in the 3,200 with a time of 13:32.84. Lillian Jagielski took 14th in the 3,200 with a time of 14:32.30.

Junior Ava Mallar took eighth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.88 seconds. Mallar took first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.07 seconds. Teammate Laura LeMar took 16th with a time of 58.76.

The 4x100 team of Salazar, Brianna Bryant, Chloe Fowler and Breana Probst took eighth with a time of 55.53 seconds. Salazar, Probst, Clark and Embach took sixth in the 4x200 with a time of 1:54.60.

The team of Calrk, Embach, Smith and Mallar took third in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:21.23. Clark, McCumber, Smith and Mallar took second place behind the Colts in the 4x800 with a time of 9:54.55.

In shot put, LeMar took 14th with a throw of 27-feet, 3 3/4 inches. LeMar took eighth in discus with a new PR throw of 83-feet, 5 inches. Senior Shelby Bryner took 17th in shot put with a throw of 25-feet, 4 1/4 inches.

Riley McCumber took eighth in high jump with a height of 4-feet, 6 inches. Savannah Watkins took 16th in pole vault with a clearance height of 6-feet. Shelby Bryner took ninth in long jump with a distance of 13-feet, 9 inches.

Colts boys track takes second at MITCA

After taking runner-up at last year's MITCA team state championships, the Hillsdale Academy boys track team took runner-up honors at this year's team state finals. The team finished behind champions Kalamazoo Hackett, who also won last year's meet. The Colts were just 3.5 points shy of winning the championship this year. They had a final points total of 1,594 compared to Hackett's 1,597.5.

Sophomore Dawson Scharer took sixth in the 100 dash with a time of 11.60.

Senior Jay Jenkins took seventh in the 400 dash with a time of 55.20 seconds. Zane Socha took eighth with a time of 55.37. Adam Alvarez took 11th with a time of 56.94.

In the 800, Grayson Rorick took sixth with a time of 2:09.09. Timothy Gaebler took eighth with a time of 2:12.37. Karol Schlueter finished 10th overall with a time of 2:13.74.

Senior Thomas Holm finished third in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200. Holm had a new PR time of 4:29.82 in the 1,600. He had a time of 9:53.65 in the 3,200. Rorick took sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:38.56. Karol Schlueter took 11th with a time of 4:45.70.

In the 3,200, Jame Rahe took eighth with a time of 10:23.89. Reece Poole took 10th with a time of 10:34.02.

Dawson Scharer took second in the 110 hurdles with a new PR time of 15.43. Teammate Alex Richards took 10th with a time of 17.28. Scharer took first place in the 300 hurdles with a new PR time of 39.41. Richards took fourth with a time of 41.98, a new PR.

The 4x100 team of Hudson Mackie, Connor Hill, Dominic Gaetano and Luke Alvarez took ninth with a time of 49.16.

The 4x200 team of Adam Alvarez, Mackie Hill and Socha took eighth with a time of 1:40.90.

The 4x400 team of Alex Richards, Rorick, Jenkins and Dawson Scharer took third with a time of 3:33.59. The 4x800 team of Schlueter, Luke Molenkamp, Reece Poole and Thomas Holm took second with a time of 8:33.46.

In shot put, Dominic Scharer took fourth with a throw of 44-feet, 9 1/4 inches. Magnus Heckel took ninth with a throw of 41-3 1/4. Joel Miller took 11th with a 40-5.

Scharer took first place in discus with a throw of 156-9. Heckel took fifth with a throw of 126-4. Miller took 14th with a throw of 107-5.

In High jump, Zane Socha took eighth with a throw of 5-6. Dominic Scharer took 10th with a throw of 5-6.

In pole vault, Connor Hill took fifth with a PR clearance height of 11-6. Hudson Mackie took 11th with a height of 9-6.

In long jump, Alex Richards took 12th with a distance of 17-4 1/4. Jay Jenkins took 16th with a distance of 16-8 3/4.
