High School Volleyball: Sinton holds off West Oso for sweep to even district record

SINTON — The Sinton volleyball team's task on Tuesday was to find a way to rebound after a loss to district-championship favorite Port Lavaca Calhoun last week.

And the Pirates would be trying to do it against a West Oso team that won its opening District 30-4A match and was hoping to ride the momentum to another victory. Sinton cruised through two sets on its home floor, but in the third set the Bears found some momentum and rode it to a three-point lead and two set points.

The Pirates (16-9, 1-1), though, found enough momentum to complete the sweep and learn a little bit about themselves in a 25-11, 25-11, 28-26 District 30-4A victory.

"They are a really good team, they jump well, they hit well," said Autumn Galvan, who finished the match with eight kills and 2.5 blocks for Sinton. "But at that moment in time we all stayed together as one and we just stayed collected, we knew we had to get a job done and we did it."

Tuesday's highlights

The Pirates made it look almost easy in the first two sets, grabbing the lead early and then riding point streaks to win both. In the third set, though, the Bears found some of the consistency they were lacking in the first two. West Oso's Milauni Williams completed a four-point run with a tip block to give the Bears as 22-19 lead. The Bears later had set points twice but could not close out thanks to two key errors. The Pirates, meanwhile, scored three straight points to end the match as Macey Hill recorded two kills for the final two points.

Tuesday's stars

Sinton's Galvan along with Macy Hill, Ava Mata and Krista Reagan each had eight kills with Kaylen Serrano record 25 assists and Lila McCain had 14 digs. West Oso's Williams finished the match with a game-best 12 kills, 10 digs and a block and Jazlyn Garza added 16 assists.

They said it

Sinton coach Michael Trujillo on where the Pirates are at as a team: "I think we are on the right path and we know what we need to focus on and the girls have the right mindset of going forward. We have to do it as a team and I think that's their mindset and I think that's the most important thing."

West Oso coach Cheryl Fillmore on how the Bears move forward: "It's like I told them, they are 1-1 and we're 1-1. We are in the running, we are still in the running, and we are taking it one game at a time and we just told them we've got to get ready for Ingleside Friday."
