High School Track and Field: State series results for Marion County athletes

Marion County athletes returned home from the state track meet with plenty of hardware to show for their hard work. The 24 individuals and six relay teams that made it to Jacksonville left with 17 Top 10 finishes.

It was a successful track and field season for Ocala area teams. Forest was a shining example of growth with the 2022 season’s one-state qualifier turning into six in 2023.

Trinity Catholic's Hope Willis became one of the most decorated athletes of the meet, with three Top 10 finishes in the shot put, high jump and discus. Vanguard's Javarien Salter and Trinity Catholic's Cedric McFadden weren’t far behind with second-place finishes in the 400 meters (47.94 seconds) and 800 meters (1:58.06), respectively.

“This year we revamped a lot of things as far as practice schedule,” Forest head coach Brett Stanley said. “Practicing on cement killed us last year, so we took our workouts to the grass. It really helped us this year.”

Their improvement adds a level of competitiveness in the county that challenges the entire state.
