High school swimming: Tuloso-Midway boys win seventh regional title

Tuloso-Midway's Gavin Lopez competes in the 100 yard butterfly during the District 16-4A swim meet at Tuloso-Midway High School on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Lopez finished first.

Tuloso-Midway held off a challenge from up-and-coming Great Hearts Monte Vista to claim the boys' seventh regional team title at the Region IV-4A meet on Saturday at the Southwest ISD Aquatic Center.

The Warriors, who finished second in 2023 at the inaugural Class 4A state swimming and diving championships, amassed 322 points. GHMV tallied 289 points and Georgetown Gateway finished with 274.

The T-M boys earned gold in the 200-yard medley relay (Alex Craig, Jarett Skoruppa, Gavin Lopez, Matteo Nisimblat) with a time of 1 minute, 40.07 seconds, in the 50 freestyle (Nisimblat, 21.59) and 500 free (Craig, 5:00.44).

Craig also claimed second in the 200 free, Lopez second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 individual medley, Anthony Rios second in 1-meter diving and Nisimblat second in the 100 free for the Warriors.

T-M's 200 free relay finished third to also finish on the podium. The top two finishers in each event earned automatic berths at the UIL State Meet, with the next eight fastest times in regional competition across the state earning call ups to compete.

London sophomore Jonah Shelton won the boys 1-meter diving with a score of 347.65, after earning silver at state last year.

Several other Coastal Bend competitors won medals in San Antonio including Calallen's Jenny Pickens (second, 200 free and second, 500 free), Calallen's Naomi Low (second, 50), Tuloso-Midway's Julianna Garcia (second, 1-meter diving), London's Julia Shelton (third, 1-meter diving) and Alice's Wesley McIntyre (second, 100 backstroke).

The Calallen girls (Kaylee Larson, Jasmine Trevino, Low, Pickens) finished second in the 200 free relay and in the 400 free relay (K. Larson, Whitney Larson, Low, Pickens).

The Class 4A state meet is scheduled for Feb. 15-16 at Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio.
