High school sports from Jan. 22-27

The snow and freezing temperatures gave way to rain for this week.

The freezing created some issues for area athletic directors, so here what's gone on this week:

MONDAY

Bowling

Adrian at Tecumseh

TECUMSEH — The Tecumseh boys rolled a perfect 300 in a Baker Game against the Maples as it took all 10 points and defeated Adrian, 24-6.

The Tecumseh girls also picked up a win against the Maples, 25-5.

Despite the loss to Tecumseh, the Maples boys posted some strong games including Gabe Wood rolling a 248, Xander Finkbeiner rolling games of 236 and 217, Gage Arnold rolling a pair of 214 games and Austin Garcia rolling a 211 and 201.

Tecumseh's Garris Waynick rolled a 262 while Tyler Chattel rolled a 247 and Kaden Salts rolled two 236 games. Owen Williams had games of 213 and 211.

On the girls' side Adrian got 191 from Sydney Chesher and 183 from Kaydance Pearson while Tecumseh's Wendy Ketola had a 223 and Brooke Kosco rolled a 213 while Kierra Pinter added a 203. Mikalah Hill had a 189, and Sage Sullivan rolled a 182.

On Sunday, the Adrian boys won the Rene Ramirez Jr. Baker Bash with a score 1,996, followed by Blissfield (1,947). Sturgis won the girls meet at 1,673 and was followed by Madison's 1,669.

Girls Basketball

Summerfield 55, Britton Deerfield 29

BRITTON - The Bulldogs improved to 7-5 with the road Tri-County Conference win.

BD (2-9, 1-4 TCC) got eight points from Lenawee County Player of the Week Alivia Salenbien and seven from Katrina Dotson.

TUESDAY

Boys Basketball

Madsion 86, Blissfield 69

BLISSFIELD — Madison erupted for 86 points Tuesday to win the LCAA contest.

Bryce Jordan had a triple-double for the Trojans with 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

Antonio Nieto led all scorers with 24 points. Jayden Saad had 13 points and eight rebounds and Brian Dopp contributed six assists and four rebounds.

“We are getting better,” Madison coach Erik Thompson said. “We shared the ball tonight and played with pace.”

The Trojans (6-8, 3-5 LCAA) led 36-34 at halftime but found its shooting range in the third quarter. Saad hit two triples in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Nieto scored nine points, and Madison went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to pull away.

Blissfield (6-6, 4-3 LCAA) was led by Blake Wood and Gabe Schnoor, who scored 16 points each, and Chet Meyer, who had 15.

Summerfield 59, Britton Deerfield 53

PETERSBURG — A six-point swing in a 10-second span changed the course of Tuesday’s TCC battle between Summerfield and Britton Deerfield.

The Patriots (11-3, 4-3 TCC) led by as many as seven points three times – 30-23, 32-25 and 34-27 – in the third quarter. Things changed suddenly late in the third quarter, however, when the Bulldogs hit two baskets on one trip down the floor.

At the 2:30 mark, Summerfield freshman Jha Jha Hornbeak got a jumper in the lane to fall and was fouled. He converted the three-point play to pull Summerfield within 34-30.

On the inbounds pass, Summerfield’s Brody St. John stole the ball and sank a 3-pointer to make it 34-33.

Colin Johnson led BD with 14 points. Brayden Shiels scored 11 and Logan Shiels had 10.

Early in the game, Logan Shiels passed BD’s Nico Johnson to become the career scoring leader in BD history.

Girls Basketball

Blissfield 42, Madison 35

MADISON TOWNSHIP — In a defensive battle between two outstanding defensive teams, Blissfield made enough shots down the stretch to pull out an important LCAA win.

The two teams battled to a 4-4 draw in the first quarter, and it was 13-10 at halftime. The Royals (7-2, 4-0 LCAA) found the shooting touch in the second half and went on for the win to remain undefeated in league play.

June Miller and Peyton Tennant each finished with 14 points for the Royals. Tennant added 16 rebounds. Collins had seven points.

Madison (9-3, 4-2 LCAA) was led by Nevaeh Parish, who scored 13 points, and Jaeda Parish, who had 10.

Bowling

Britton Deerfield at Summerfield

BLISSFIELD — Britton Deerfield remained undefeated in league play as the Patriots beat Summerfield at Rich Lanes, 27-3.

BD took both Baker Games to lead 10-0 while Ben Islay led in match play with games of 206 and 193 while Jayden Brooks rolled a 218.

WEDNESDAY

Wrestling

Madison Quad

MADISON — The Trojans took a pair of LCAA duals by topping Hillsdale, 62-15, and Ida, 67-3, while Onsted also took down the Hornets and Bluestreaks.

The Wildcats beat Hillsdale, 52-28, and Ida, 54-24, as Hunter Kangas, Keegan Gray, Joey Denkins, Teagan Cunningham and Dylan England all went 2-0.

Manchester Quad

MANCHESTER — The Panthers took part in a Cascades quad at Manchester where they fell to the Division 4 sixth-ranked Flying Dutchmen, 53-24.

Getting wins for Addison on the night were Caleb Potts (132 pounds), Joe Clark (165), Lincoln McFate (190) and Mike Beard (113), all with pins. No score was available for the Panthers' second dual of the night.

Competitive Cheer

LCAA Jamboree 3

IDA — Hudson took the third LCAA jamboree of the season as the Tigers posted a total score of 742.68.

Onsted was second with a score of 725.84 while Madison was fourth (656.2) and Clinton was sixth (614.7).

Boys Basketball

Reading 64, Morenci 38

MORENCI — The Bulldogs dropped a non-conference game as they fell to the Rangers at home.

Seamus Alcock had 20 points for Morenci (1-13).

Bowling

Onsted at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE — The Wildcats dropped a pair of LCAA duals as the boys lost 28-2 while the girls fell 26.5-3.5.

Sydney Nichols led the girls team with a 218 while Breanna Rosenthal rolled a 179. The boys were led by Jayden Valasek with games of 201 and 177 while James Bayes rolled a 174.

Gymnastics

Saline 130.025, Adrian 124.45

SALINE — Reese Beauleaux had a strong meet as she won the all-around, but the Maples fell to the Hornets.

Beauleaux posted a score of 34.95 in the all-around while also taking the uneven bars in a tie with Haylee Vore at 8.125. Beauleaux also took first in the balance beam (8.975) and the floor routine (9.075).

THURSDAY

Wrestling

Adrian 67, Jackson 6

JACKSON — The Maples clinched their third SEC White Division title in four years as they rolled against the Vikings to improve to 15-1 in dual meets this season.

Sam Adams (126), Cameron Trevino (132), David Aranda (150), Chase Henline (165), Chance Lowell (175), Kobe Olivarez (190), Micah Blaker (106) and Anthony Wilt (120) all had pins while Thomas Dayharsh (157) and Jaden Jankowski (215) had major decisions and Michael Santiago (138) and Khristyan Young (144) won by decisions. Diego Orozco (113) won by void.

Tecumseh at Pinckney Quad

PINCKNEY — Tecumseh picked up an SEC White win against Pinckney, 48-21, while also winning a non-conference dual against Gabriel Richard, 48-26.

Going 2-0 for Tecumseh on the night was Tucker Cole (150) with a pin and decision, Max Bledsoe (215) with two voids, Wyatt Andrews (120) with a void and major decision, Carson Fields (126) with a decision and pin and Max Marten (138) with two pins.

Girls Basketball

Morenci 44, Lenawee Christian 28

MORENCI — The Tri-County Conference girls basketball race is far from over, but Morenci is threatening to run away with it.

The Bulldogs (10-1, 5-0 TCC) beat LCS to open up a two-game lead in the league heading into the second half of the season.

“The TCC will be a dogfight to the finish,” Morenci coach Ashley Joughin said. “We know that everyone is on the hunt and now, we are the hunted. We are trying to game plan and focus one game at a time and do what we set out to do at the beginning of the season, and that’s to win the league and get a district title.”

Emersyn Bachelder led the way with 16 points while Leah Rorick hit two early 3-pointers and finished with eight points for Morenci. Evelyn Joughin also had eight points. Hannah Baker had seven points for the Cougars (5-6, 4-2 TCC). Summerfield also has two league losses.

Tecumseh 69, Jackson 35

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh picked up the SEC White Division win in the Tecumseh Middle School gym.

“It was a great atmosphere in the old gym,” Tecumseh coach Kristy Zajac said.

Alli Zajac led Tecumseh (7-3, 2-0 SEC White) with 22 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Her sister, Addi Zajac, pulled down 19 rebounds to go with her 16 points. Ashlyn Moorehead also had a big game with 17 points.

Lauren Kilbarger and Chloe Bullinger each had eight rebounds.

Erie Mason 61, Britton Deerfield 34

ERIE — Alivia Salenbien continued her scoring spree with 17 points for the Patriots, but Erie Mason picked up the TCC win.

BD is now 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the TCC.

Summerfield 52, Sand Creek 27

SAND CREEK — Tanana Emmendorfer came away with a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Aggies in the loss.

The Aggies are 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the TCC.

Boys Basketball

Onsted 66, Madison 41

MADISON TWP. — Onsted started the second half on a 26-4 run to put the game out of reach.

Four Wildcats (9-4, 6-1 LCAA) reached double figures in scoring, including Ayden Davis (19 points), Rylan Henagan (15), Aidan Paquin (11) and JT Hill (10). Davis added 14 rebounds and Talan Hutchinson had 10 assists.

Madison (6-9, 3-6 LCAA) got 29 points and five rebounds from Antonio Nieto.

Blissfield 55, Clinton 40

BLISSFIELD — Blissfield bounced back from Tuesday’s loss with the LCAA home-court win.

The Royals (7-6, 5-3 LCAA) led most of the way but didn’t pull away until the fourth quarter.

Gabe Schnoor scored 16 for Blissfield while Chet Meyer scored 12 points and Blake Wood added 11.

Clinton (5-9, 2-6 LCAA) was led by Calan Keith’s 11 points.

Hillsdale 61, Hudson 31

HILLSDALE — The Tigers lost the LCAA matchup on the road to the Hornets.

Jackson Jones led Hudson (1-12, 0-8 LCAA) with nine points. Lucius Arnett had five rebounds, and Qwaden Wallace dished out four assists.

Columbia Central 61, Addison 58

BROOKLYN — The Panthers hung with one of the Cascades Conference’s top teams on the road.

Spencer Brown swished five triples and scored 17 for Addison. Drew Spink had 12 points.

The Panthers (4-9, 2-8 Cascades Conference) made 12 3-pointers as a team.

Bowling

Adrian 30, Ann Arbor Pioneer 0

ADRIAN — The Maples blanked the Pioneers as they rolled to the SEC crossover win.

Adrian led 10-0 after the Baker Games with a 148-144 win and a 180-100 victory.

Xander Finkbeiner rolled games of 225 and 214, and Austin Garcia rolled a 200 and 180.

Hockey

Capital City 7, Lenawee United 4

CHELSEA — United took a loss in the Chelsea Showcase as they fell to the Caps in a high-scoring game.

Capital City started strong and held a 5-1 lead after the first with Adam Bartlett (Clinton) scoring on a Rhett Micallef (Onsted) assist. Lenawee (13-4-1) battled back to make it a 5-3 game with Iain Mahaffey (Tecumseh) scoring once and getting an assist with Bartlett while Carson Ritz (Adrian) scored the other goal.

Micallef scored once again to make it a 5-4 game off a Ritz assist with 12:04 to go, but the Caps answered with two more goals.

Boys Swimming

Jackson 96, Adrian 87

JACKSON — The Maples lost a tough league battle with the Vikings despite taking eight of the 12 events on the night.

Picking up first-place finishes for Adrian were London Rising 200 freestyle (1:46.33) and 100 freestyle (48.64) and Hadyn Gould in the 200 IM (1:59.97) and 100 butterfly (52.27) while Kade Opsal won the 100 backstroke (53.89) and Brayden Kilpatrick won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.21).

Opsal, Gould, Ian Baker and Noah Judson won the 200 medley (1:44.04) before the team of Opsal, Gould, Kilpatrick and Rising won the 400 freestyle (3:28.14).

Tecumseh at Chelsea Tri

CHELSEA — Tecumseh dropped a pair of duals as it fell to the host Bulldogs, 115-70, and Marshall, 111-72.

Grant Fahle made a MISCA state cut by winning the 100 butterfly (58.58).

FRIDAY

Wrestling

Lenawee County All-Star Wrestling Tournament

ADRIAN — It was the biggest Lenawee County All-Star Wrestling Tournament to date with 14 boys champions and four girls champions crowd in the 47th edition of the meet.

Leading the way was Clinton and Hudson as the Redwolves and Tigers won six titles.

Hudson won six titles in some exciting matchups. Julien Kimling beat Clinton's Braylon Long for the 126 title in a 2-1 match while Cole Marry battled back to beat Lukas Leonard for the 138 title, 7-6, and Barron Mansfield won the 190 title with a 2-0 win against Sand Creek's Daniel Meckley. Nicholas Sorrow (120) won by tech fall while Coy Perry (144) and Austin Marry (150) won by pinfall.

Clinton dominated the girls matches with Faith Blackburn winning 125/135 title with a pin, Annabelle Howard winning the girls 140/145 title and Raven Aldridge winning the 155/175 title. Connor Younts won at 132 with a tech fall, Cliff Jones won the 165 title with a 10-0 major decision and Bryce Randolph won the 175 title with a 10-2 major decision.

Madison had a night to remember as the Trojans took home four titles with Arayah Tindall winning the girls 100/105 title with a pin, Malaki Mosher winning the 113 title with an 11-3 major decision, Jalonn Borders winning at 157 by pinfall and Logan Russell winning the 285 title by pin.

Adrian and Tecumseh each took home a title with the Maples' Micah Blaker winning at 106 with a pin while Max Bledsoe beat Wyatt Hicks, 3-2, at 215 in the only overtime match of the night.

Boys Basketball

Lenawee Chrisitan 99, Whiteford 76

ADRIAN — The Cougars dropped a game earlier this year to Whiteford but were determined not to let that happen again.

LCS (11-2, 6-1 TCC) scored the most points it has since 1997 and took a two-game lead in the TCC.

Jaxon Salenbien scored 36 points, and Brandon Summer 21 for LCS. Summer scored 19 points in the second half alone. Daniel Scrupsky added 15 points on five 3-pointers. LCS made 12 triples as a team.

It was a two-point game in the third quarter when LCS's offense erupted with a series of open layups, 3-pointers and offensive-rebound buckets.

Tecumseh 60, Jackson 49

JACKSON – Jackson staged a fourth-quarter comeback, but Tecumseh held the Vikings by making 12 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Barrie led Tecumseh (11-1, 2-0 SEC White) with 19 points while Lenawee County player of the week Tyler Clement added 13.

Ryan Mossburg and AJ Bryant each had five rebounds.

Britton Deerfield 77, Morenci 38

MORENCI — Britton Deerfield’s offense went into high gear in the second half, sinking nine 3-pointers, including eight in a 33-point third quarter.

Colin Johnson hit three of those and finished with 19 points for the Patriots (12-3, 5-3 TCC). Logan Shiels had 18 points, four steals and five rebounds, and Brayden Shiels tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Owen Plum contributed with six rebounds and four assists.

Morenci (1-14, 0-8 TCC) was led by Isaac Shoemaker’s eight points.

Adrian 76, Pinckney 61

ADRIAN — The Maples put three players in double figures and picked up win No. 10 on the season.

Stevie Elam scored 28 points, and Sean Parker 14 and Tristan Hayes finished with 13 for the 10-2 (1-1 SEC White) Maples.

Sand Creek 64, Quincy 57

QUINCY — Trevor Opel and Rory Eack turned on the scoring machine once again for the Aggies, combining for 47 points in the non-league win.

Opel also had 16 rebounds for the 6-6 Aggies.

Girls Basketball

Hudson 45, Hillsdale 40

HUDSON — Sam Anderson had 16 points on the season coming into Friday’s LCAA game and outscored that by one with 17 points to lead Hudson to the win.

Hudson (4-6, 3-3 LCAA) trailed 14-7 after the first quarter and mounted the comeback. They hit six 3-pointers as a team and took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on.

Dinah Horwath hit three of those triples and had 13 points.

Madison 45, Onsted 23

ONSTED — Defense did it again for the Trojans, who held the Wildcats to eight field goals.

Jaeda Parish led Madison (10-3, 5-2 LCAA) with 12 points, and Nevaeh Parish scored 10.

Karlie Kimerer led Onsted (5-6, 2-3 LCAA) with 10 points.

Blissfield 49, Clinton 26

BLISSFIELD — The Royals remained unbeaten in the LCAA with the road win.

June Miller hit four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for Blissfield (8-2, 6-0 LCAA). Peyton Tennant had a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 points. Avery Collins had eight rebounds and seven assists, and Leigh Wyman had five steals.

Clinton (5-5, 2-4 LCAA) was led by Zoey Sierer, who scored eight points.

Pinckney 51, Adrian 36

PINCKNEY — The Maples' downfall was the second quarter when the Pirates outscored Adrian 12-2.

Ella Salenbien led Adrian (4-5, 1-1 SEC White) with 13 points.

Columbia Central 61, Addison 39

ADDISON — The Panthers had a big second half, but it wasn’t enough to catch one of the top teams in the Cascades Conference.

Kayli Trumble scored 13 points and Lexi Patterson 9 for Addison (3-9, 1-6 Cascades Conference-West).

Bowling

Britton Deerfield at Sand Creek

ADRIAN — The Patriots boys team beat Sand Creek, 25-5, while the Aggies' girls team won, 27.5-2.5.

Mason Cuolahan rolled a 174 while Hunter Maran rolled a 170 to lead the BD boys after going up 10-0 in the Baker Games. Sand Creek was led by Jonathan Fisher with a 183.

On the girls side, Sand Creek had 10-0 lead after the Baker Games before Ania Glinski rolled a 158 for the Aggies.

Hockey

Forest Hills Central 3, Lenawee United 0

CHELSEA — United dropped their second-straight game of the Chelsea Showcase in a shutout against Forest Hills Central.

Lenawee (13-5-1) and Central played to a scoreless first and second periods, but FHC got an early goal in the third and denied United from any comeback.

SATURDAY

Competitive Cheer

Cardinal Invite

MICHIGAN CENTER — Out of 25 teams at Michigan Center's Cardinal Invite, including four Division 3 and four Division 2 teams, four-time defending Division 4 state champion Hudson was the top team.

The Tigers posted a total score of 758.56, beating out 16 other Division 4 teams. The second-best score on the day belonged to Onsted with a 739.96 to win the Division 3 meet. Madison took second in Division 3 with a score of 702.

Tecumseh won the Division 2 meet at 624.4 while Adrian was fourth at 552.9. Addison took ninth in Division 4 at 652.9 while Morenci was 16th (507.16) and Sand Creek was 17th (292.6, no Round 3).

Wrestling

Grass Lake Invite

GRASS LAKE — Sand Creek got one first-place finish and placed six others at the Grass Lake Invite.

Wyatt Fox won the 113 bracket by going 4-0 with three pins and a major decision. Of the Aggies' six places, three took third including Daniel Meckley (190), Jake Schamberger (215) and Reid Hulett (285).

Morenci's Zachary Martinez (126) took third as well.

Holt Invite

HOLT — The Clinton girls traveled to Holt where each girl placed, including one champion.

Faith Blackburn won the 125/137 bracket, going 5-0 with five pins. Annabelle Howard (125/137) and Raven Aldridge (136/144) took third, and Kierra Fivenson (125/137) took sixth.
