High School Roundup: A look Lenawee County sports from Oct. 2-7

Another busy week of high school sports in Lenawee County is in the books.

Here's how it all played out:

Volleyball

Lenawee Christian hosted a big quad Saturday where it went 3-0 against Blissfield (25-18, 25-17), No. 5 Hillsdale Academy (21-25, 26-24, 15-6) and No. 1 Mendon (25-11, 25-12).

Hannah Baker recorded her 1,000th kill of her high school career after rejoining the team from a knee injury during basketball season.

The Cougars continued to roll through the TCC by sweeping Sand Creek on Thursday, 25-12, 25-9, 25-15.

Maddie Osburn had three kills, three assists, two blocks and eight digs for Sand Creek while Saydie Boring had two kills, three blocks and six digs.

After suffering its first Cascades Conference loss to Grass Lake on Tuesday, Addison got off to a slow start Thursday against Manchester, losing the first two sets before making a thrilling rally to knock off the Flying Dutch, 22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 29-27, 15-13.

Molly Brown had another fantastic match with 24 kills and 27 digs to go with six aces while Laci Patterson had 15 kills and eight blocks and Izzy Durkee had eight kills and 18 digs. Lexi Patterson had 43 assists and 11 digs while Kate Huston had 27 digs and Kayli Trumble added 22.

Addison carried the momentum to the weekend to win the Hanover Horton Invite. The Panthers went undefeated beating Battle Creek St. Philip (25-19, 25-16), North Adams Jerome (25-15, 25-10) and Hudson (25-13, 25-14) in pool play before taking down Hastings (26-24, 25-19), Hanover Horton (12-25, 25-21, 15-10) and Adrian (25-14, 19-25, 15-10) in bracket play.

Brown added 64 kills, 43 digs and 10 aces to her week while Durkee had 22 kills, 42 digs and eight aces and Laci Patterson had 38 kills, 10 blocks and 10 aces. Lexi Patterson had 108 assists.

Tecumseh is alone atop the SEC White standings after beating Ypsilanti at home, 25-6, 25-10, 25-14, to improve to 3-0 in the league and 24-8-2 overall.

Emma Eldred and Emma Leitner each had seven kills with Eldred adding six aces and Leitner getting five digs. Lily Hammond had 16 assists to go with nine kills.

Adrian defeated Chelsea in SEC White play Wednesday, falling in Set 1 before taking the next three, 15-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-21.

Ella Salenbien had 14 kills and nine digs while Lauren Fraser had 12 kills, eight digs and two aces and Allison Shaw had 12 kills, three aces and two blocks. Liv McKenzie had 42 assists, eight digs and two aces.

The Maples took second at the Hanover Horton Invite, falling to Addison in the final, 25-14, 19-25, 15-10. Adrian beat East Jackson (25-20, 25-8), split with Hastings (21-25, 25-22) and lost to Parma Western (25-18, 25-15) in pool play before beating Western in the quarterfinal (20-25, 25-22, 15-11) and Jackson Northwest in the semi (26-28, 25-12, 15-5).

Fraser had 47 kills, 24 digs, 10 aces and five blocks while Halei Lafever had 30 kills, 26 digs and 10 aces. McKenzie had 124 assists and 23 digs while Aubrey Zuvers had 37 digs and Shaw had 28 kills and seven blocks.

Onsted defeated Clinton at home in a big LCAA victory for the Wildcats, 25-12, 25-14, 25-20.

JayElle Christian had 11 kills and four digs while Kaylee Rankin had 35 assists and three digs and Elisa Viale had nine digs. Cloe Gerschwiler had seven kills and two blocks.

Clinton got five kills and nine digs from Kaylee Kranz, four blocks from Lauren Sheneman, 11 assists from Nalani Schanz and nine digs from Aubrey Lauer.

The Redwolves lost to Madison (25-13, 26-24) in the semifinals at the Concord Invite after beating Olivet (25-11, 25-12) to begin bracket play after beating Madison (25-21 25-23) and Springport (25-12, 25-16) and splitting with Concord (25-17, 17-25) in pool play.

Kranz had 46 kills and 31 digs while Schanz had 19 kills, 28 digs and 46 assists, Eden Frederick had 12 kills and seven blocks, Sheneman had 17 kills, Sammy Starnes had seven aces and Lauer had 44 digs.

Madison defeated Hudson on the road in LCAA play, 25-8, 25-20, 25-7.

Tatum Wilson had 14 kills for the Trojans while Jillian Kendrick had 35 assists, while Caylan Sower and Roni Flores each had 11 digs with Flores adding four aces.

Jozlyn Weber had 17 digs for the Tigers while Paige Clark had nine.

The Tigers picked up their first two wins at the Hanover Horton Invite by beating North Adams Jerome (25-17, 25-19) and falling to Battle Creek St. Philip (25-5, 25-13) and Addison (25-17, 25-14) in pool play before beating Camden Frontier in the silver bracket (25-17, 25-21) and then falling to East Jackson (19-25, 25-23, 15-13).

Brooke Clark had 19 kills and 26 digs, Kassie Pickford had 14 kills, 12 aces and 23 digs, Weber had 65 digs, Morgan Kelley had 27 digs and Naika Rath had seven blocks.

Cross Country

The Clinton boys and girls teams picked up big wins Saturday the Hudson Boosters Invite as both won the upper divisions.

The girls team had a score of 75 while Onsted and Blissfield were fourth and fifth with 107. Archbold (Ohio) was second with 95.

Onsted's Emmry Ross won 18:33.30 while Blissfield's Hope Miller was fourth (19:36.47) and Clinton's Cylee Elkins and Allison Bowles were sixth (20:02.49) and eighth (20:16.70) respectively.

The Redwolves' boys team had a score of 91 while Madison was sixth (168), Onsted was seventh (185) and Blissfield took eighth (229). Erie Mason was second with 134.

The Wildcats got another individual winner with Mitchell Hiatt at 16:24.44 while Clinton's Cole Hillegonds was fifth (17:15.70), Blissfield's Ian Waddell was eighth (17:23.73) and Clinton's Gabe Manchester (17:27.70) and Lucas Goodman (17:32.43) were ninth and 10th.

In the lower division, Hudson girls won with a score of 85 while Sand Creek was seventh (181) and Lenawee Christian was ninth (199). Union City was second with 90 points.

LCS' Izzy Brooks won the race at 19:29.75 while Addison's Stephanie Hernandez was seventh (20:47.02).

Gorham-Fayette (Ohio) won the lower division boys with 111 points. Hudson was fifth (135), Sand Creek took seventh (155), Morenci was ninth (209), LCS was 10th (224) and Britton Deerfield was 12th (299).

Alex Czeiszperger took fourth for Hudson at 16:54.24 while Michael Allen of East Jackson won (16:33.83).

Clinton's boys and girls also won the second LCAA jamboree of the season hosted by Dundee on Wednesday.

The girls team posted a score of 39 to lead Onsted (50), Blissfield (65) and Hudson (92) while the boys team posted a 56 to beat Madison (81) and Onsted (85) while Hudson was fifth (115) and Blissfield was seventh (157).

While the Redwolves took the top two spots, Onsted runners won the races with Ross running 18:54.87 to top Elkins (20:25.82) while Hiatt won at 16:44.19.

On the girls side, helping lead Clinton to the win was Bowles in fourth (21:02.83) and Samantha Coots in eighth (22:22.57). Onsted's Raegan Brosamer took 10th (22:34.12) while Blissfield was led by Miller in third (20:58.13), Hailey Sills in fifth (21:15.31) and June Miller in ninth (22:23.13).

In the boys race, Hillegonds (17:18.92) and Goodman (17:36.36) took fifth and sixth respectively while Manchester was ninth (17:58.37). Joining Hiatt in the top-10 for Onsted was James Bayes in 10th (18:01.90) while Hudson's Alex Czeiszperger took seventh (17:44.75) and Madison's Paul McClure took eighth (17:53.82).

Adrian went to the Portage Invite on Saturday where the boys finished fifth and the girls took 16th. The Maples had 217 points while Pinckney won with 115. The Maples were led by Braylon Petty in ninth at 15:49.

The girls had 460 points while Grand Rapids Christian won at 100 points with Sophy Skeels taking 10th (18:40.9).

Addison raced against Jonesville in a Cascades Conference dual, but the Panthers didn't have enough runners on either boys or girls teams to post a team score.

Hernandez won the girls race at 20:47.25 while the girls placed four of the top-5 runners, but didn't have a fifth runner.

Boys Soccer

Clinton hosted Lenawee Christian on Thursday with the Redwolves picking up an exciting, 4-3 victory.

The score was 2-2 at the half, but Clinton had the 2-1 advantage in the second half. Eli Brainard had a goal and an assist while Jack and Max Stamats each had a goal for the Cougars while Pierson Cousino had an assist.

Clinton traveled to Onsted and beat the Wildcats in LCAA play Monday, 5-0.

Samson Schaffner and Angel Rubio scored twice and each had one assist and Jimmy Schaffner scored as well. Max Hampel had two assists and Sam Quintana had one.

Lenawee Christian took on Jackson Christian at home and fell, 5-2, on Tuesday.

The Cougars trailed 3-2 at the half.

Eli Brainard had a goal and an assist while Jack Stamats had the other goal and Max Stamats had an assist.

Both Adrian and Tecumseh played a tough first half in Tecumseh Monday, but the visiting Maples pulled away in the second half for the 5-2 SEC White win.

The team's exchanged goals with Adrian going up 1-0 and 2-1, but Tecumseh tying it up both times. The Maples went up 3-2 in the first half, this time Tecumseh didn't have an answer as it was the score at the half and Adrian would tack on two more in the second half.

"It was the best half of soccer we've played this year," said Tecumseh coach Jerry Nowak.

Mohamed Ouali and Carter Allen each scored twice, but Joey Spagnoli's goal to end the half was game-winner. Ouali and Spagnoli each had assists.

Spagnoli added two more goals Saturday in a 2-1 win at Columbia Central with Nathan Wojcik and Brady Hanosh getting the assists and Gary Kemerer making seven saves.

Isaiah Navarette scored and had an assist for Tecumseh while Coby Wild scored as well and Eli Neil had an assist.

Tecumseh hosted Jackson Northwest on Wednesday and won, 2-1. Cole Dejonghe and Luke Milliken each scored with Wild getting an assist. The team then hosted Grass Lake Thursday and lost, 4-2, with Wild and Dejonghe netting the goals.

Blissfield fell at Hillsdale in a high-scoring LCAA match, 7-5.

Blake Wood had four goals and an assist while Matthew Wolfe scored once and Sean Samuels had an assist.

The Royals and Onsted tied, 2-2, on Wednesday in Blissfield.

Girls Golf

Adrian and Tecumseh competed against the rest of the SEC at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti for the league championships where Adrian took second among SEC White teams and Tecumseh took third.

Adrian shot 417 while Tecumseh carded a 426, both trailing Pinckney's 365.

Cassidy Hawken shot an 85 to take second while Grace Smart and Ryan Kominek shot 108 and Megan Schutte shot 116. Hawken was second overall on the season.

Tecumseh's Brooke Kosco shot 92 and Lucy Whelan shot a 97 while Chloe Griewahn shot 109 and Olivia Swirple and Bella Juozapaitis each shot 128.

Kosco and Whelan joined Hawken as All-SEC White honorees.

Adrian competed Monday as well, splitting with Ypsilanti Lincoln (201-214) and Saline (173-201) where Hawken shot a 44 and Tuesday, falling to Ann Arbor Huron (185-201) with Hawken carding a 40.

On Tuesday, Clinton concluded its run for the LCAA title by winning all five league jamborees and the LCAA championship with a team-record 403.

"What can I say about these 5 ladies, they have done so much work to get to this point and I couldn't be prouder of them," said coach Nito Ramos.

Kyleigh Ramos won the league's individual medalist honor while Brenna Broman, Kierra Fivenson, Raven Aldridge and Kaylie Livingston improved throughout the season as well to lead the program to the title.

Girls Swimming

Adrian took on Jackson and picked up the win, 111-75.

Emma Pino and Elanora Andre were each part of two relay wins and two individual wins on the day. Both were joined by Alexis Fox and Haylee Vore to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:03.41) before Pino won the 200 IM (2:32.16) and 100 freestyle (57.51) and Andre won the 50 freestyle (26.25) and 500 freestyle (5:52.98).

Pino was joined by Ella Salenbien, Allison Marks and Reese Beauleaux to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.26) while Andre was joined by Fox, Vore and Madison Betz to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:10.81).

Fox won the 200 freestyle (2:13.81), Salenbien won the 100 butterfly (1:01.44) and Betz won the 100 breaststroke (1:23.64).

Tecumseh traveled to Chelsea on Wednesday and lost, 141-31.
