HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Upper Cape girls lacrosse wins league title

The Upper Cape Tech girls lacrosse team defeated South Shore Tech, 5-4, to secure the the Mayflower Small Vocational League title on Friday.

Adryanna Turner and Alaina Hines each scored twice, while Meredith Connor added another for Upper Cape (15-2).

The defense was led by Connor, Hayley King, Emma Hanoian and Baylee Osswald. Goalie Molly Petty had seven saves in net.

Friday's win avenged one of the Rams two losses on the year, a 10-6 loss to the Vikings in their first meeting. Upper Cape Tech will try avenge its other loss against Bourne on Monday.

Girls Lacrosse

Dennis-Yarmouth 9, Falmouth Academy 8 (OT): In sudden victory overtime (three minutes of play, and then the teams switch sides for another 3 minutes until someone scores), the Dolphins (2-12) scored the winning goal as time expired as the end of the second three minutes.

Faye McGuire (four goals, 12 draw controls), Margaret Lowell (two goals, draw control), Carly Coggins (goal), Susanna Lowell (goal) and Natalie Hurlbut's four draw controls helped offensively for Falmouth Academy (1-6). Willow Wakefield had 14 saves in net for the Mariners.

Falmouth 10, Sandwich 9: The Clippers (8-7) snapped a two-game slide with the win over the Blue Knights (13-3).

Nauset 16, Plymouth South 4: The Warriors (9-7) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Boys Lacrosse

South Shore Tech 12, Cape Tech 0: The Crusaders fall to 0-16.

Baseball

Nauset 15, Martha’s Vineyard 4: Chase Beach pitched five innings of four-hit ball for the Warriors in the win. Arthur Figueiredo and Pete Murphy both drove in three runs, while Ethan Beer was 3-for-4 at the plate for Nauset (6-11).

Sturgis 2, St. John Paul II 0: It was a battle of the pitchers. Robbie Pennswick pitched a no-hitter, and struck out nine in the win for Sturgis (8-5). Brian Mancinelli pitched six innings, scattered three hits, and struck out 10 for JPII (11-6). Jameson Stec opened the sixth inning with a double and James Hereford followed with a single as both came home to score for Sturgis (8-5). Sturgis pitching extend hitless inning streak to 15 innings.

Monomoy 8, Rising Tide 5: The Sharks (10-8) clinched the Cape & Islands League Lighthouse Division with the win.

Sandwich 4, Falmouth 2: The Blue Knights have captured the Cape & Islands League Atlantic Division title with the win. Joe Coughlan and Ty Creighton each had two hits and an RBI for Sandwich (14-3).

Barnstable 8, Dennis-Yarmouth 4: Jack Tarbox came in relief and got the win, giving up no earned runs on two hits in 3⅔ innings. Offensively, Owen Jones paced Barnstable (13-5), going 3-for-4, with a single, double and triple and three RBIs.  Sladen Johnson went 2-for-3, with a double and RBI. Nathaniel Newman started the game for the Redhawks, giving up three earned runs on six hits in 3⅓ innings.

Softball

Falmouth 9, Sandwich 7: Anna Velesig pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, while going 4-for-4, with a triple, run, and two RBIs for the Clippers in the win. Thalia Freire went 2-for-4 (run, RBI), while Christina Femino finished 2-for-3, (2 RBIs) fro Falmouth (7-9).

Dennis-Yarmouth 20, Barnstable 5: Becca Linn drove in four runs on three hits (a double in the third and a home run in the sixth) to lead the Dolphins in the win. D-Y (8-9) pulled away for good with six runs in the third inning. In the third, Jordyn Pineau doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Gabby Tanon doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Linn doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs, while Alexa Barboza singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs. Azoff was the winning pitcher for as the ace went six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out five, and walking one.

Nauset 9, Monomoy 8: The Warriors (13-5) scored in the eighth inning to beat the Sharks (10-8).

Martha’s Vineyard 6, Rising Tide 4: The Vineyarders (2-15) won their second game of the season.

Dover-Sherborn 18, Mashpee 2: The Falcons dropped to 4-14.

Boys Tennis

Sandwich 4, Falmouth 1: Andrew Emmel beat Thomas Ghossein (first singles, 6-1, 6-0), Pablo Gonzalez defeated Sam Collins (second singles, 6-1, 6-0), while Joey LaScola/Kallen Kestenbaum beat Kunio Saito/Dheer Brahambbhtt (first doubles, 6-1, 6-1) for the Blue Knights. Sandwich (6-10) won second doubles by forfeit. Quintin Hefferan defeated Quinn Johnston (third singles, 6-0, 7-5) for Falmouth (3-11).

Martha’s Vineyard 4, Nauset 1: The Vineyarders (13-1) have won two in a row. The Warriors (12-2) lost their second match of the season.

Rising Tide 3, St. John Paul II 2: The Lions drop to 0-13.

Girls Tennis

Falmouth 4, Sandwich 1: Alexis Christian/Maia Ledwell defeated Raighan Howard/Maryn Kestenbaum (first doubles, 6-0, 6-0), and Rachel Larson/Sadie Inman beat Chloe Cahoon/Tenley Rothera (second doubles, 6-1, 6-2) for the Clippers doubles sweep.

Caroline Moskal beat Grace Rothera (first singles, 6-0, 6-0), and Genevieve Marcanchie defeated Kaity Landry (second singles, 6-0, 6-4) for Falmouth (12-2). Arianna Tedeschi beat Phoebe Corner (6-4, 6-2) for Sandwich (3-14).

Nauset 3, Martha’s Vineyard 2: Cristin Schadt/Jill Ernstsrom defeated Sofia Balsas/Ellie Pennington (first doubles, 6-3, 6-2), and Katie Ray O'Reilly/Elexa Malouin beat Sophia Winters/Sophie Roads (second doubles, 6-2, 6-1) for the Whalers doubles sweep. Anjali O'Brien defeated Andrea Morse (third singles, 7-5, 6-4) for Nauset (9-6).

Cali Gigllio defeated  Nicole Boyce (first singles, 6-0, 6-1), and Evelyn Brewer beat Lela Bailey (second singles, 6-0, 6-1) for Martha's Vineyard (9-7).
