High school roundup: South Jefferson gets past Lowville in "B" Division boys soccer battle

Oct. 4—LOWVILLE — Teis Hegelund scored the game's only goal off an assist from Jonas Larkin to propel South Jefferson to the 1-0 boys soccer victory over Lowville in a Frontier League "B" Division clash Tuesday.

Hegelund scored five minutes into the second half for the Spartans (10-1 overall, 8-0 league). South Jefferson goalkeepers Jack Porter and Carter Stone combined for six saves with four and two, respectively. The Spartans held a 7-4 edge in shots.

Isaiah Spence turned away six shots for Lowville (7-5, 6-4).

CARTHAGE 3, GENERAL BROWN 1

Zane Busch scored back-to-back goals in the first half as Carthage captured a crossover match against General Brown in Carthage.

Gage Marino also scored in the first half for the Comets (5-5-2, 3-4-1). Ian Mono and Grant Gillman added assists. Deveraux Watson stopped seven shots in goal.

Nolan Ganter scored for the Lions (4-8, 1-7).

LAFARGEVILLE 2, COPENHAGEN 0

Nate Wyatt and Bradley Smith scored a goal apiece as LaFargeville topped Copenhagen in the closely contested "D" Division at LaFargeville.

Mason Klossner made 11 saves for LaFargeville (7-4, 6-4) against Copenhagen (8-5, 6-4).

LYME 6, ALEXANDRIA 1

Alex Radley supplied three goals and two assists as Lyme claimed a "D" Division victory over Alexandria in Chaumont.

Jonny LaFontaine added a goal and two assists for the Lakers (11-1, 9-0). Dakota Brown and Ryan Scott contributed a goal each. Logan Gregory chipped in an assist. Evan Froelich made three saves in goal.

River Costello scored for the Purple Ghosts (2-7-2, 2-7-1) with Mason Savage supplying the assist.

CANTON 6, SALMON RIVER 1

Ethan Francey finished with two goals and three assists as the Golden Bears pulled away from the Shamrocks for the Central Division win in Fort Covington.

Ryan Jones added two goals and two assists for Canton (9-0).

Carter Johnson scored on a penalty kick for Salmon River.

MASSENA 9, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 2

Sal Perretta scored the opening three goals for Massena, which rolled to the Central Division victory in Massena.

Nate Page followed with two goals and three assists for the Raiders. Luc Eddy added two goals back-to-back and Drake Love scored his first varsity goal. Calen Ward also scored.

Taylor Noble scored twice for Norwood-Norfolk.

OFA 8, POTSDAM 3

Tyler Sovie scored three goals and assisted on two others as Ogdensburg Free Academy took the Central Division game over Potsdam in Ogdensburg.

Syrus Gladle contributed two goals and two assist for the Blue Devils (8-3, 8-1).

Will Sullivan, John Duffy and Theo Hughes scored for Potsdam.

In another Central Division game, Gouverneur defeated Malone 2-1.

PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 5, BRUSHTON-MOIRA 0

Jude TenEyck and Peyton Finen each scored two goals as Parishville-Hopkinton pounced early to defeat Brushton-Moira in an NAC East Division game in Brushton.

Avery Zenger contributed a goal and an assist for the winning Panthers, who scored all five goals in the first half.

GIRLS SOCCER

ST. LAWRENCE CENTRAL 5, TUPPER LAKE 0

Courtney Moreau delivered three goals to key St. Lawrence Central over Tupper Lake in Brasher Falls.

Maddyson Bernard and Jocelyn Moreau each added a goal and an assist. Karissa Young made three saves in the shutout.

LISBON 3, EDWARDS-KNOX 0

Ava Murphy scored an unassisted goal and assisted on another as Lisbon scored all three goals in the second half to hold off Edwards-Knox in Lisbon.

Gabby Richardson and Leah Warren also scored for the Golden Knights. Averee Bouchey made 10 saves in the shutout.

MADRID-WADDINGTON 4, ST. REGIS FALLS 1

Anika Zysik and Sam Milburn each provided a goal and an assist as Madrid-Waddington recorded all four goals in the second half in the victory in Madrid.

Hailey Marcellus and Reese Durant also scored for the Yellowjackets. Aiole Burke made four saves for Madrid-Waddington.

CHATEAUGAY 1, COLTON-PIERREPONT 0 (OT)

Irelynn LaPlante delivered the winning goal in the second overtime period to launch the Bulldogs over the Colts in the East Division and remain unbeaten.

Ryleigh Reardon provided the assist on the winner for Chateaugay, ranked 12th in the state. The Bulldogs' Kaelyn Morgan made one save in goal.

In another game, Parishville-Hopkinton and Brushton-Moira played to a scoreless overtime tie.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

SPARTANS EDGE CYCLONES

Spencer Purvis and Tim Renzi placed first and second, respectively, and South Jefferson held off Watertown to gain a sweep in Adams.

Purvis completed the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 43 seconds with Renzi following in 19:01 for the Spartans, who beat the Cyclones 26-29 and the Indian River Warriors 19-45. Watertown topped Indian River 20-39.

Watertown's Josh Stone finished fourth, followed by Samuel Demarco in fifth and Evan Autote in sixth for the Cyclones (5-3). Ayden Sullivan and Tommy Piddock picked up critical seventh- and eighth-place finishes for the Spartans (8-0). Ryan Gauthier was third for Indian River (4-4) in 19:13.

SOUTH LEWIS WINS TWICE

Collin Stafford posted the top time by nearly a minute to lead South Lewis to victories over Beaver River and host Sandy Creek.

Stafford finished the 3.07-mile course in 16:06 as the Falcons defeated the Beavers 22-33 and the Comets 17-38. Beaver River defeated Sandy Creek 20-33.

Aiden Sampson finished third and MacKoy Maciejko fourth for South Lewis (7-1). Connor Zehr took second for Beaver River (6-2) in 17:03. Teammate Mason Zehr finished fifth. Brayden Ashby led Sandy Creek, finishing sixth.

VIKINGS TOP COMETS

Tristan Topa crossed the 3.1-mile course first in 17:52 to highlight Thousand Islands' 32-39 win over Carthage at Dexter.

Breudan Handley took third for the Vikings (3-5) and Luik Hopper sixth.

Nahjeed Abel finished second for incomplete General Brown. Gage Adkins led Carthage (2-6) in fourth place.

CANTON RULES MEET

Unbeaten Canton took first in a combined invitational for NAC squads in Ogdensburg.

The Golden Bears recorded 28 points to outdistance Potsdam, which had 63, and Norwood-Norfolk with 66.

The Flyers' Dominic Fiacco finished first overall in 16:26. Massena's Andrew David placed third.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

SOUTH LEWIS SWEEPS

Mallory Kraeger, Brynn Bernard, Felicity Szucs and Hadassah Siegrist finished first through fourth, respectively, to pace South Lewis to wins over Beaver River and host Sandy Creek.

South Lewis beat Beaver River 17-45 and Sandy Creek 15-56. Beaver River won over Sandy Creek 15-41.

Kraeger finished in a time of 20:35 on the 3.07-mile course for the Falcons (7-1). Hannah Moser led Beaver River (6-2) in fifth.

SPARTANS WIN 2 AT HOME

South Jefferson runners took the top four spots to ease to a pair of wins, against Watertown and Indian River at Adams.

Ellie Roberts finished the 3.1-mile course first in 20:31. She was followed by teammates Annabell Renzi, Carley Warden and Chloe Abbott. South Jefferson (6-0) topped Watertown 16-47 and Indian River 15-50. WHS beat Indian River 40-57.

Amalia Netto placed fifth for Watertown (4-2).

VIKINGS WIN IN DEXTER

Anna Huizenga and Sam Bari took third and fourth, respectively, to lead Thousand Islands in its wins over General Brown and Carthage in Dexter.

Huizenga cleared the 3.1-mile course in 21:18 with Bari finishing in 21:33. The Vikings (4-4) beat the Lions 35-55 and the Comets 32-54. Carthage topped General Brown 27-42.

Hayley VanPutte took first overall for Carthage (3-5) in 20:51. General Brown's Zoey Sovie was second in 21:06.

FLYERS CONTROL MEET

Norwood-Norfolk grabbed five of the top 13 places to capture a combined meet of NAC schools at the site of the Section 10 championships in Ogdensburg.

Allie Snell finished second for the Flyers, behind Canton's Bennett Schmitt. Snell's teammate Maddie Carista placed third and Rachel Hewey was fifth as Norwood-Norfolk recorded 28 points. Canton was second with 44, followed by Malone.

Schmitt registered the top time in 20:05.

GIRLS SWIMMING

LOWVILLE 53, SOUTH LEWIS 28

Alyssa Stalker swam to victory in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and contributed to Lowville's win in the 200 medley relay as the Red Raiders prevailed over the Falcons on senior night in Lowville.

Brenna Law (500 freestyle), Cori Haney (200 individual medley) and Mikayla Nicol (50 freestyle) each won an individual event and appeared on a winning relay for the Raiders (6-2). Law and Haney also swam on the fastest 400 free relay. Karli Gillette won the 200 free and appeared on the 400 free relay.

Jade Dolan won the 100 freestyle for South Lewis (0-8, 0-7).

WATERTOWN 106, SOUTH JEFFERSON 60

Molly Dickinson won a pair of individual events as Watertown stayed unbeaten with a victory over South Jefferson in Adams.

Dickinson took first in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle for the Cyclones (8-0). Jasmine Ferguson added a win in the 100 butterfly and swam on the winning 200 medley relay. She also swam the fastest time in the 100 backstroke. Lily Johnson claimed the 200 freestyle, swam on a winning relay, and recorded the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke. Mallory Peters won the 50 free and appeared on the 200 medley relay.

POTSDAM 118, OFA 50

Meredith Fiske captured the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle as Potsdam won 10 races in the NAC victory over OFA in Ogdensburg.

Lauren Cameron added wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle races for the Sandstoners.

VOLLEYBALL

MASSENA 3, OFA 0

Kaniehtentha Thompson compiled 10 kills and Lauren Park served for 14 points, including five aces as Massena swept Ogdensburg Free Academy 25-22, 25-21, 25-14 in Massena.

Katelyn Benham added 10 assists and four service points with three aces. Allison Lazore recorded four kills and three points.

GIRLS TENNIS

ONEIDA 5, SOUTH JEFFERSON 0

Oneida swept through South Jefferson to register the Section 3 Class B semifinal victory in Oneida.

Julianna Caroli, Madison Castle and Lilly Gormley won in straight sets in singles for the Express. Claire Vaccaro and Myah Rainbow outlasted Madison Pfleegor and Laurelle Surette 6-2, 6-4 at first doubles.

South Jefferson finished 12-2.
