Venice High volleyball coach Brian Wheatley makes a point during his club's match against H.B. Plant in the Class 7A-Region 3 final Wednesday in Tampa.

Plant 3, Venice 1

TAMPA − The H.B. Plant High volleyball team displayed why it is the No. 1 team in the state.

Venice showed it is not far behind.

After the sides split the first two sets, the Panthers gained momentum in the third set and never relinquished it in a 3-1 victory over Venice in the Class 7A-Region 3 final in front of a near sellout gathering at Plant’s gymnasium.

While the Panthers (23-3) move to the Final 4 next week in Winter Haven, defending 7A state champion Venice sees its season come to an end at 22-7.

It was 364 days ago at the Teepee, where Venice roared back from 2-1 down and a 24-20 deficit in the fourth set to defeat Plant in five sets en route to its sixth state championship in program history.

“They’ve been thinking about us for 365 days,” Venice coach Brian Wheatley said. “We’ve been thinking about Plant for three days.”

Now it is Venice’s turn to reflect.

In a feeling-out first set that featured 11 ties and four lead changes, the Panthers erased a 15-12 deficit by ending the set with a 13-4 run.

“I feel like we had some chances in Set 1 to make a run,” Wheatley said. “We just never really got our groove on tonight.”

In the second set, Venice broke an 11-all tie with six straight points, four on Plant hitting errors along with an ace from junior Kyla Freddolino and a kill by Summer Kohler.

Things started to unravel for Venice in the third set. Deadlocked at 6-all, the Panthers reeled off 10 straight points. Along the way Wheatley picked up a yellow card after it appeared the home team needed four attempts to get the ball over the net.

It was one of a few calls that did not go Venice’s way, including a net violation on the first point of the match.

“Plant is No. 1 in the state for a reason,” Wheatley said. “You can’t take anything away from that.”

In having its six-game winning streak snapped, Venice never led in the fourth set, but pulled to within 13-12 on a Plant hitting error. Winners of 10 straight, the Panthers came back with three straight points and closed it out without a challenge.

“Obviously we didn’t play our best,” Wheatley said. “The doubt demons got to us a little bit. The moment kinda got to us a little bit. You’ve got to bring it night in and night out.”

Wheatley pulled out all the motivational stops, including the “Rocky IV” film and music in between sets.

“We got a little juice going. We needed to build on positive things,” Wheatley said after ending his 30th season at the helm at Venice. “Every time we started building on a positive thing, we would do something that wasn’t good for our success.”

After recording one kill in the first set, Kohler ended with 17 kills to go along with two aces and a block. Senior JaLynn Gardner ended with eight kills and a block. Senior Taylor Orris had six kills and a block.

Ranked ninth in the state by the FHSAA power rankings, Venice was the first team to take a set against Plant since Clearwater’s Calvary Christian on Oct. 3.

The Panthers’ lone three losses came in tournament play to Carrollwood Day, Berkeley Prep and Oviedo, all regional finalists. All of Venice’s losses were to teams that reached their respective regional finals.

“They served us tough,” Wheatley said. “We struggled in our pass. When you do that it takes you out of your offense. It was kind of the plan we had for them. That was probably the No. 1 thing. We had to take care of our side of the net, and we didn’t do that.”

It was a tough finish for a team that had aspirations on winning back-to-back state titles for the first time in program history.

“Our team is great people. That’s No. 1,” Wheatley said. “They have high character and loved one another. That’s what I enjoyed the most. They wanted to please us. They wanted to please each other.”Venice, which had not lost since falling to Barron Collier at the Battle at the Beach on Oct. 7, graduates seniors Jayda Lanham, Elizabeth Mopps, Carli Waggoner, Orris, Hilary Hupp and Gardner.

“I told the seniors how much they meant to our program and everything they’ve done,” Wheatley said. “The kids that came in this past year, their ability to grab onto our culture and dive into it. They were great. They were awesome.”

Returning are the likes of libero Brighton Ferguson, Kohler, setter Ava Wallingsford, Freddolino, Zoe O’Leary and Madi Robinson.

“For sure,” Wheatley said on having a good nucleus returning.
