High School roundup: Lenawee County sports from Jan. 8-13

The snow is now starting to fall in Lenawee County as everyone gets back from break and the 2024 portion of the 2023-24 winter seasons get into full swing.

Monday

Girls Basketball

Adrian 76, Central Academy 0 

ADRIAN — The Maples didn’t allow a field goal. The closest Central Academy came to turning the scoreboard was two missed free throws in the second half.

Ella Salenbien led a parade of scorers for Adrian (3-3) as she poured in 21 points. She also had 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Amor Sanchez and Ayla Tindall scored 10 points each while Izzy Morris added nine points. Makenna Johnson had five assists and six steals while Sanchez had seven steals.

Grass Lake 59, Addison 27 

ADDISON — Grass Lake made seven 3-pointers and jumped out to a 32-11 halftime lead and coasted to the Cascades Conference East Division win against the Panthers.

Izzy Durkee and Taylor Jezierski scored six points each for Addison (3-5).

Gymnastics

Tecumseh 124.35, Saline 110.975

SALINE — Tecumseh picked up a victory against the Hornets with Madi Rentfrow leading the way for the co-op team.

Rentfrow (Columbia Central) won the all-around (34.4), floor (9.3), beam (8.75) and uneven bars (8.0). Tecumseh freshman Olivia Atkin was second on the bars (7.85) and third on beam (7.75). Freshman Kelsey Covell (Clinton) was second on beam (8.25) and Tecumseh sophomore Kazy Garland was third on the bars (7.1).

Bowling

Chelsea sweeps Adrian

CHELSEA — Both Maples teams fell in SEC White matches as the Bulldogs boys beat Adrian, 19-11, while the girls won 24.5-5.5.

The Adrian boys led 6-4 after the Baker Games, but the Bulldogs picked up their play in the regular games. Gage Arnold rolled games of 256 and 236 while Xander Finkbeiner had a 256 and 174, Austin Garcia rolled a 193 and Sawyer Cranmore rolled a 189.

The girls trailed 6-4 after the Baker Games before Sydney Chesher got the only regular game victory with a 177.

Quincy at Britton Deerfield

TECUMSEH — The Patriots fell for the first time this season as Quincy got the win, 23-7.

It was a 6-4 BD deficit after the Baker Games, but the Orioles were strong in match play. Hunter Maran got a win with a day-high 221 for the Patriots.

The girls lost 28-2 with Brianna Finfrock rolling a 124 for a win.

Britton Deerfield 26, Sand Creek 23

BRITTON — The Patriots picked up their first win of the season as they topped the Aggies in a TCC matchup.

BD (1-8, 1-3) held an 11-8 lead at the half before playing even in the second half. Elloisa Guzman had 10 points to lead the Patriots while Sand Creek (1-7, 0-3) got nine from Tanana Emmendorfer.

Clinton 55, Onsted 22

ONSTED — The Redwolves picked up a fourth straight win as they beat the Wildcats in LCAA play.

Clinton (5-3, 2-2) led 10-8 after the first, but dominated the rest of the way, outscoring Onsted (4-5, 1-2) 45-14 the rest of the way.

Zoey Sierer had 15 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist while Kaylee Kranz had 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Eden Frederick added 10 points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Karlier Kimerer had nine points for the Wildcats.

Lenawee Christian 56, Erie Mason 46, 4OT

ADRIAN — The Cougars needed four overtimes to beat the Eagles in a TCC thriller.

Free throws were the difference, LCS coach Emilie Beach said.

“Brielle (Parker) got fouled on a 3-point attempt and they were called for a technical foul,” Beach said. “So, she shot five free throws and made them all. Our defense was pretty good all night.”

Parker was the only Cougar in double figures with 12 points but Emilia Yatzek, Brynn Davis and Callie Anderson each scored nine points and Izzy Brooks scored eight.

LCS (5-3, 4-0) is tied atop of the TCC standings with Morenci.

Hudson 40, Dundee 39

HUDSON — The Tigers picked up a tight LCAA victory as they beat the Vikings to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Taylor Kopin had 15 points and five rebounds while Dinah Horwath had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists. Sam French made two late free throws to give Hudson the distance it needed to seal the win.

Blissfield 67, Hillsdale 31

HILLSDALE — The Royals dominated in another LCAA win as they led 36-13 at the half.

Avery Collins had 17 points while Leigh Wyman added 15 and June Miller had 12. Wyman added seven rebounds and six steals while Collins had seven assists and five steals for the Royals (6-1, 4-0).

Morenci 42, Whiteford 27

MORENCI — The Bulldogs' defense was tough in the first half as they got out to a strong 24-9 lead at the half.

Morenci (8-1, 3-0 TCC) had a balanced attack with five scorers netting at least six points with Alyssa Gibbs leading with 10 points.

Ida 35, Madison 31

IDA — The Trojans took their first LCAA loss as they fell to the Bluestreaks on the road to drop to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Jaeda Parish had a team-high 12 points for Madison.

Boys Basketball

Onsted 64, Clinton 59 

CLINTON — The Wildcats used a big third quarter to break open a close game against the Redwolves.

“We were able to come away with the big win, on the road against a hot-shooting Clinton team,” Onsted coach Brad Maska said.

Clinton (2-3, 4-6 LCAA) made 12 3-pointers, but Onsted (6-4, 3-1 LCAA) hit for seven.

Ayden Davis scored 18 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the Wildcats. Ryan Henagan finished with 17 points and six assists while JT Hill had 11 points and five rebounds.

Jalen Stelzer had 17 points while Calen Keith had 16 and Devon Trent had 12.

Britton Deerfield 80, Sand Creek 46

BRITTON — The Patriots came out firing in the first half to the tune of a 47-26 lead in the TCC matchup with the Aggies as they rolled to another win.

BD (10-1, 4-0) got 26 points out of Ryan Good while Logan Shiels added 17, Colin Johnson had 12 points while Owen Plum chipped in with 10.

Sand Creek (5-4, 1-2) got another strong outing from Trevor Opel with 19 points while Rory Eack added 21.

Lenawee Christian 55, Erie Mason 49 

ERIE — The Cougars overcame a hot shooting night by Erie Mason. The Eagles made 10 3-pointers and held the Cougars to their lowest offensive output of the season.

Jaxon Salenbien scored 19 points and Brandon Summer 14 for the Cougars (8-2, 3-1 TCC). Tyler Salenbien chipped in with 10 points.

LCS led 40-39 going into the fourth quarter.

“It was close down the stretch,” LCS coach Matt Summer said. “It felt like every time we got a little bit ahead, they hit a big three. They did a good job on Brandon and Jaxon and didn't let them get too many easy shots."

Blissfield 61, Hillsdale 46

BLISSFIELD — A strong second half allowed the Royals to pull away from the Hornets in the LCAA matchup.

Blissfield (5-4, 3-2) trailed 16-14 after the first, but took a 30-26 lead into the half. The Royals outscored Hillsdale 31-19 in the second half, including 12 points from Gabe Schnoor, who had a game-high 28 points. Blake Wood added 11.

Ida 41, Madison 38

MADISON TWP. — The Trojans fell to 0-5 in LCAA play and 3-7 overall with a narrow loss to the Bluestreaks.

Madison was held to 17-7 deficit at the half before putting up 31 in the second half to get back into the game.

Antonio Nieto had 12 points for the Trojans.

Dundee 59, Hudson 41

DUNDEE — The Tigers dropped an LCAA matchup against a strong Vikings team.

Hudson (1-9, 0-5 LCAA) trailed 28-17 at the half. Jackson Jones had 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Lesile 75, Addison 47

ADDISON — The Panthers had a strong start, but the Blackhawks controlled the game rest of the way to hand Addison a Cascades Conference loss.

The Panthers (3-6, 1-5) led 17-8 after the first and had a 33-27 lead at the half, but Leslie put up 30 in the third quarter to take a 57-38 lead into the fourth.

Jaxen Sword and Josh Ray each had 13 while Gunnar Demeuse had 11.

Whiteford 83, Morenci 43 

OTTAWA LAKE — Whiteford snapped a two-game losing skid by handing Morenci its ninth loss in 10 games.

Shamus Alcock led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Talan Kruse scored 10. The Bulldogs are 1-9 and 0-4 in the TCC.

Gymnastics

Adrian 125.225, Parma Western 122.65

ADRIAN — The Maples picked up their second league victory as Reese Beauleaux and Haylee Vore led the team.

Beauleaux won the all-around at 34.175 as she also took the beam (9.2) and floor (8.55) while Vore won the vault (8.7) and uneven bars (7.925).

Boys Swimming

Erie Mason 102, Tecumseh 78

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh got back in its own pool, but fell in the dual.

Grant Fahle won the 100 butterfly at 1:00.38.

Wrestling

Blissfield, Madison, Onsted at Hillsdale Quad

HILLSDALE — Madison got a pair of LCAA wins as the Trojans rolled against Hillsdale (60-22) and Blissfield (52-18).

Going 2-0 on the day were Logan Russell (285) with two pins, Malaki Mosher (113) with a pin and void, Lucas Dopp (120) with a pin and void, Paul McClure (126) with a pin and decision, Lukas Leonard (138/144) with two pins, Xavier Rodriguez (144/150) with two pins, Jalonn Borders (157) with two pins and Angel Cabrera (165) with a pin and major decision.

Blissfield lost to Onsted, 48-30, with the Wildcats getting pins from Joey Denkins (138), Cameron Harvey (150), Dylan England (165) and Patrick Pangborn (285). Sam Solis (157) and Teagan Cunningham (144) each won by decisions.

Going 2-0 on the day for Blissfield was Jude Rosas (106) with a pin and void, Gage Rothman (132) with two pins and Nolan Wilson (215) with two pins.

Clinton at Perry Tri

PERRY — The Redwolves won a pair of matches at Perry, beating Laingsburg (59-21) and Perry (50-27).

Going 2-0 on the night were Zack Taylor (113) with two pins, Joe Hodges (120) with a pin and void, Braylon Long (126) with two tech falls, Connor Younts (132/138) with two pins, Maurice Ames (138/144) with two pins, Dylan Badge (144/150) got a pin and decision, Cliff Jones (157) with a pin and injury, Bryce Randolph (175) with two pins, Hamza Rafferty (285) with a pin and void,

Addison at Hanover Horton Quad

HANOVER — The Panthers split a pair of Cascades Conference duals, beating Hanover Horton, 51-27, while falling to Napoleon, 64-12.

Mike Beard (126) went 2-0 with a pin and void.

Hockey

Lenawee 7, Ann Arbor Huron 2

ANN ARBOR — After taking their first loss since Nov. 18 on Saturday, Lenawee United bounced back with an SEC crossover win against Huron.

United (11-3-1) got two goals from Cameron Mahony (Madison) while Rhett Micallef (Onsted) and Adam Bartlett (Clinton) each had a goal and an assist. Alek Novesky (Onsted), Brennan Cornack (Tecumseh) and Luke Dunham (Tecumseh) all scored as well.

Connor Wilson (Tecumseh) and Aidan Sweinghagen (Tecumseh) each had two assists while Cameron Ritz (Adrian) had one.

Seth Kordyzon (Onsted) had 10 saves.

Bowling

Adrian at Jackson

JACKSON — After taking a pair of losses against Chelsea earlier in the week, the Maples bounced back with road SEC White wins at Jackson with the boys getting a close 16-14 victory while the girls won 21-9.

The Adrian boys trailed 6-4 after the Baker Games, but held a 12-8 advantage in match play. Gabe Wood got a pair of wins while Xander Finkbeiner rolled a 200 and Gage Arnold rolled a 190.

The Maples' held a 10-0 advantage after the Baker Games before Sydney Chesher led Adrian with a 190 in match play. Lexie Kirkpatrick had a 145 and Jailyn Lahring rolled a 143.

Thursday

Boys Basketball

Britton Deerfield 68, Whiteford 66

OTTAWA LAKE — Logan Shiels buried a 10-foot jumper at the buzzer to lift Britton Deerfield to a TCC win against Whiteford.

BD led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats tied the game 66-66 with 3.5 seconds left on a shot by Josh Hill.

After a timeout, BD tried throwing the ball inbounds from the backcourt, but the Bobcats tipped it out of bounds, which put the ball about even with the 3-point line with 2.9 seconds left.

“We got the look we wanted,” Shiels said. “I knew I had either Colin (Johnson) in the corner or Brayden (Shiels) down low. Those were my two options. I didn’t have too much time, but once I got him on my back, I just went up with it.”

The buzzer sounded as the shot fell, giving BD the win and helped the Patriots improve to 11-1 on the season and 4-1 in the TCC.

Shiels finished with 19 points for BD. Colin Johnson scored 17 while Ryan Good scored 10. Owen Plum and Keegan Bush combined for three important 3-pointers for BD.

Onsted 65, Ida 58  

IDA — Ayden Davis scored 11 of his 28 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as Onsted handed Ida just its second loss of the season.

Davis also had 15 rebounds, seven blocked shots and seven assists.

Rylan Henagan finished with 12 points while Quinn Hiram had 8 for Onsted (7-4, 4-1 LCAA).

Blissfield 71, Hudson 28 

BLISSFIELD — Ten Royals scored as Blissfield improved to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the LCAA.

Gabe Schnoor led Blissfield with 17 points.

Drew Engle Wendt had 13 points and Isaac St. John 10 for Hudson (1-10, 0-6 LCAA).

Madison 47, Hillsdale 33 

MADISON TOWNSHIP — Antonio Nieto filled up the stat sheet with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Trojans (4-7, 1-5 LCAA), who won for the fourth time in 11 games.

Brooks Horwath had a season-high 13 points. Jayden Saad had eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

Dundee 61, Clinton 53 

DUNDEE — Ninth-ranked Dundee improved to 11-1 on the season, but not before a couple of fourth quarter steals and layup allowed the Vikings to pull away from Clinton.

Calen Keith poured in 29 points for the Redwolves (4-7, 2-4 LCAA) and Jalen Stelzer scored 13.

Summerfield 76, Morenci 43 

MORENCI — Summerfield exploded for 16 3-pointers and won the road against the other Bulldogs in the TCC.

Shamus Alcock scored 20 points for Morenci (1-10, 0-5).

Erie Mason 63, Sand Creek 51 

SAND CREEK — The Eagles broke a four-game losing streak with the road win.

The Aggies were led by Rory Eack with 21 points and eight rebounds. Parker Bowles with 13 points. Trevor Opel with 11 points. The Aggies are 5-5 and 1-3 in the TCC.

Wrestling

Tecumseh at Adrian SEC Duals

ADRIAN — The Maples went 2-0 on day, topping rival Tecumseh (37-30) while also beating Ann Arbor Skyline (72-9).

Going undefeated for Adrian were Evan Cousino (113), Diego Orozco (113), Sam Adams (126), Cameron Trevino (138), Chance Lowell (175), John Breckel (190) and Chad Dayharsh (285).

Boys Swimming

Adrian 103, Chelsea 82

ADRIAN — Hadyn Gould broke the school's 100-yard breaststroke time as he helped lead Division 3 fifth-ranked Adrian to an SEC White win.

Gould posted the new record 100 breaststroke time at 1:00.16 while he also won the 200 IM (2:00.31). He was joined by Kade Opsal, Ian Baker and Maddox Betz to win the 200 medley relay (1:45.80) and by Opsal, Brayden Kilpatrick and London Rising to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.87).

Rising, Baker, Kilpatrick and Noah Judson won the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.33) while Rising won the 200 freestyle (1:47.30) and 100 butterfly (53.20), Opsal won the 50 freestyle (22.27) and 100 backstroke (54.97) and Kilpatrick won the 100 freestyle (52.73).

Tecumseh 128, Ypsilanti 33

YPSILANTI — Tecumseh picked up a win in the pool with a group of underclassmen stepping up.

Sophomore Sam Warren won the 100 backstroke (1:12.44) and Loris DeFore won the 500 freestyle (6:27.59).

Competitive Cheer  

Adrian, Tecumseh at Chelsea SEC White

CHELSEA — Tecumseh took second and Adrian was fourth at the first SEC White jamboree of the season.

Tecumseh had a total score of 541.96 while Adrian had 500.12 and Chelsea won with a score of 640.64.

Wrestling

Monroe SMCC Tournament

MONROE — The Royals took the Monroe SMCC tournament title with four Blissfield wrestlers going 5-0.

Gage Rothman, Jude Rosas, Sean Samuels and Juan Barcenas were undefeated, leading the Royals to a championship.
