High school roundup: Carthage boys, Sandy Creek, South Lewis girls advance in Section 3 soccer tourneys

Oct. 18—CARTHAGE — Gage Marino, Chester Hutchinson and Grant Gillman each scored a goal as Carthage blanked Oneida 3-0 in its Section 3 Class A boys soccer tournament opener Tuesday.

Zane Busch and Joseph Stephan each recorded assists for the fifth-seeded Comets (9-7-1 overall). Deveraux Watson made eight saves in the shutout.

Carthage next plays at No. 4 Jamesville-DeWitt (6-10-1) on Friday.

No. 12 seed Oneida finished 4-13.

VVS 1, INDIAN RIVER 0

Peyton Kinne scored in the second half as No. 10 seed Vernon-Verona-Sherrill knocked off No. 7 Indian River in a Class A first-round game in Philadelphia.

Ryan Mitchell recorded nine saves in goal for the Red Devils (9-6-2), who move on to play at second-seeded South Jefferson (12-2) in a quarterfinal game Friday.

Indian River finished 7-9-1.

DERUYTER 2, ALEXANDRIA 0

Lenny Escobar and Devens Whalen scored a goal in each half as 16th-seeded DeRuyter defeated No. 17 Alexandria in a Class D preliminary game in DeRuyter.

Aden Daley and Nick Whitt added an assist apiece and Wesley Pforter made six saves in the shutout for the Rockets (6-8-2) against the Purple Ghosts (2-12-2).

MASSENA 3, POTSDAM 0

Drew Smutz scored a goal in each half to help Massena defeat Potsdam in a Northern Athletic Conference Central Division victory in Potsdam.

Cullen Taraska added a goal for Massena (9-5-1, 8-4-1) and Sal Perretta and Brennan Aldous each secured assists. Michael Herrick made nine saves in the shutout.

Miles Attemann saved seven shots for Potsdam.

SALMON RIVER 7, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 1

Dylan Johnson scored two goals in the first two minutes as Salmon River rolled to the Central Division win in Fort Covington.

Johnson finished with three goals and an assist, and Carter Johnson added three goals of his own for the Shamrocks (8-7, 7-6). Logan Brault also scored.

Xavier Delormier played most of the game in goal for the Shamrocks, making six saves.

Zane Tatom scored unassisted for Norwood-Norfolk.

In other boys games, Ogdensburg Free Academy defeated Gouverneur 1-0 in overtime and Canton rocked Malone 9-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

SANDY CREEK 2, IHC 1

Maddie Coe and Ceanna Reff each scored goals in the second half and the Sandy Creek defense held off an IHC surge to claim the Section 3 Class C first-round game in Watertown.

Scout Preston made seven saves in goal for the No. 18 Comets (6-9-1), who advance to play at No. 2 Cooperstown on Friday.

Abigail Bombard scored in the first half for the No. 15 Cavaliers (3-12-2).

SOUTH LEWIS 2, WATERVILLE 1

Megan Klossner and Mariah LaFountain scored a goal apiece to lift 19th-seeded South Lewis over No. 14 Waterville in Class C first-round game in Waterville.

GracieLynn Black made seven saves to help the Falcons (5-10-1) advance to play at No. 3 Frankfort-Schuyler on Friday.

HOLLAND PATENT 3, GENERAL BROWN 0

Faith Zylinsky scored a pair of goals to spark sixth-seeded Holland Patent to the shutout victory over No. 11 General Brown in a Class B first round game in Holland Patent.

Natalie Rubas added a goal for the Golden Knights (11-5-1). Isabella Hobin made four saves in goal.

Geona Wood stopped 19 shots for General Brown (7-8-2).

LISBON 7, EDWARDS-KNOX 0

Regan Pirie scored the first four goals of the game as Lisbon completed a perfect 10-0 Northern Athletic Conference West Division regular season with a victory over Edwards-Knox in Russell.

Gabby Richardson and Ava Murray also scored for the Golden Knights, who are 15-1 and ranked No. 4 in Class D in the state. Leah Warren and Alison Bell assisted on two goals apiece. Averee Bouchey made five saves in goal in the shutout.

HERMON-DEKALB 2, HEUVELTON 1

Olivia Simser scored the winning goal on an assist from Hannah Colleer in the second half as Hermon-DeKalb claimed second place in West Division with a win in DeKalb Junction.

Aliyah O'Donnell added an unassisted goal for Hermon-DeKalb (6-4). Jayla O'Donnell made eight saves in goal for the Demons.

Chasity Johnson scored for Heuvelton.

CHATEAUGAY 3, BRUSHTON-MOIRA 0

Irelynn LaPlante scored a goal and assisted on another as unbeaten Chateaugay extended its record to 13-0 with an East Division win over Brushton-Moira in Chateaugay.

Maddy Macomb and Payton Parmeter also scored for the Bulldogs and Ali Johnston assisted on two goals. Kaelyn Morgan made seven saves for the shutout.

ST. LAWRENCE 1, ST. REGIS FALLS 0 (OT)

Courtney Moreau delivered the game-winner off an assist from Baylee Cheney with just over three minutes left in the second overtime period to lead St. Lawrence to the East win in St. Regis Falls.

Kalissa Young made three saves in goal for the Larries. Cameryn Doe stopped 13 shots for the Saints.

COLTON-PIERREPONT 6, TUPPER LAKE 0

Teegan Planty scored twice as Colton-Pierrepont powered to the East Division win over Tupper Lake in South Colton.

Kaitlyn Houston and Ariana Clark each provided a goal and an assist for the Colts. Hailey Delaney and Meridyth Clark also scored for Colton-Pierrepont. Logan LaShomb made five saves for the shutout.

In another girls game, Hammond defeated Harrisville 3-1.

VOLLEYBALL

MASSENA 3, BRUSHTON-MOIRA 0

Jenna Pryce served for 18 points, including six aces, and Katelyn Benham totaled 17 assists as Massena defeated Brushton-Moira 25-8, 25-8, 25-10 in an NAC match in Brushton.

Benham added five kills, four points and three aces. Kaniehtentha Thompson finished with seven kills, eight points and four aces and Nylah Tillman added six kills and seven points for the Red Raiders. Allison Lazore supplied six points, five aces and five kills.

In other NAC matches, Malone outlasted Salmon River 3-2 and Chateaugay blanked Tupper Lake 3-0.

GIRLS SWIMMING

OFA 48, MALONE 46

Ogdensburg Free Academy outlasted Malone with a second- and third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay finale to capture in the NAC meet in Ogdensburg.

Malone took first in the final event but OFA, which led 44-40 entering the last race, scored enough to prevail.

The Huskies swept all three relays and added a pair of individual wins from Brianna Perrigo (200 and 500 freestyle). Adrienne Brill (100 butterfly) and Natalie Marlow (100 backstroke) also swam on winning relays.

Katherine Barkley won the 50 and 100 freestyle for OFA. Gabby Paradise (100 backstroke) and Taylor Dashnaw (200 individual medley) also gained individual wins.

In other meets, St. Lawrence Central beat Gouverneur 64-24 and Canton won over Massena 76-14.
