HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Alanna Raygoza becomes first Sandwich girls wrestling state champion

Alanna Raygoza (Sandwich) became the first Division 3 Girls Wrestling State Champion at 107 lbs, and the first girls champion at Sandwich, as she beat Lorelei Smith of South Shore by pin in a time of 1:36 on Saturday. She also is the youngest Blue Knights wrestler (boys or girls) to become state champion. Raygoza advances to the All State Tournament in Salem, which will take place on Feb. 23 and 24.

Wrestling

In the Division 3 Boys State Championship, Luke Steele (Sandwich) placed 3rd in the 190 lbs tournament as the second seed out of 16 wrestlers. He beat Mohaned Said (Wilmington) in the 3rd place match, Lucas Beadenkopf (Holliston) in the quarter-finals, and Collin Eddy (Franklin County) in the Round of 16. Steele advances to the All State Tournament.

Peter Silvernail (Nauset) competed in the 285 lbs tournament and finished 3rd overall as the 9th overall seed out of 16 competitors. He beat Matt Terry (Ashland) in the 3rd place match, Kip King (Wakefield) in the quarter-finals, and Nathan Hartunian (Wayland) in the Round of 16. Silvernail advances to the All State Tournament.

In the Division 1 State Championship, Brandon Shull (Barnstable) was runner-up in the 150 lbs as the number 10 seed out of 16 wrestlers. Shull defeated Ethan Opela (Natick) in the Round of 16, Caden Smith (Central Catholic) in the quarter-finals, and Hussein Alobaidi (Lowell) in the semi-finals. Shull advances to the All State Tournament.

Girls Hockey

Nauset/Monomoy 5, Martha’s Vineyard 1: Gabby Basset and Emily Decker each found the back of the net twice for the Warriors (16-2-1) as they beat the Vineyarders (10-8). Carly Brand also scored, while Morgan Willis and Sienna Reeves each dished out an assist for Nauset/Monomoy.

Sandwich 3, King Phillip 1: The Lady Knights (9-9-2) have won three straight as Casey Pestilli, Adrianna Kelsch, and Darby Rounseville each scored a goal.

Plymouth South 3, Barnstable 2: The Red Hawks (6-11-1) came up just short on the road.

Falmouth 2, Winthrop 0: The Clippers (17-2-1) bounced back from their first road loss of the season on Monday with a road victory.

Brookline 7, Nantucket 2: The Whalers finished their season 0-16.

Boys Hockey

Nauset 4, Scituate 3: Sam Mayhew scored twice, which included the winner with just over two minutes left in the game, and had a helper for the Warriors (16-1-1). Logan Poulin scored a goal and had two assists, while Jake Eldredge also scored a goal for Nauset.

Somerset Berkley 4, Bourne 0: The Canalmen (13-5-1) were shutout for the first time this season. Ryan Collins played well on defense, while Jackson Palmborg played well in net.

Archbishop Williams 6, Falmouth 2: The Clippers (10-8) lost in the first round of the Buddy Ferreira Classic Tournament.

Hopkinton 5, Martha’s Vineyard 4: The Vineyarders (8-8-1) came up just short in the first round of the Fairleigh Dickinson Tournament.

Norton 6, D-Y/CCT/CCA 0: The Dolphins fall to 4-13-1.

Middleboro 5, Monomoy/Mashpee 2: The Sharks fall to 3-12-2.

Weymouth 2, Barnstable 0: The Red Hawks (6-11-2) were shutout for just the second time this season.

Boys Basketball

Burke 68, Dennis-Yarmouth 58: The Dolphins fall to 7-11.

Indoor Track and Field

The Indoor Track and Field Championships continued at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston as the Barnstable boys and girls competed on Friday.

For the boys, Jahi Kilburn had a top 10 finish in the 300m with a time of 37.12, while Daniel Sanderson followed up in 14th place with a personal record time of 37.29. Kevin DeFeudis finished 22nd in the mile (4:49.57), while Jaxson Merrill's personal record of 9:55.53 in the 2-mile earned him a 6th place finish.

Harry Ells was 16th in the shot put (42-00.75), while William Fajardo-Doss finished 20th in the 55m prelims with a personal record time of 6.80.

The 4x200m relay team of Ja'Meer Anderson, Fajardo-Doss, Kilburn, and Sanderson came in 4th place with a time of 1:32.91.

For the girls, Chloe Dibb finished in the top 10 of the 1000m in 9th place (3:09.47), while Lilly DeDecko also placed in the top 10 of the mile in 8th place with a season best time of 5:19.43. Emma Steenstra came in 21st place of the 600m with a time of 1:49.38.

The 4x800 relay team of Callie DeDecko, Lilly DeDecko, Dibb, and Sophia Murphy placed 3rd with a time of 10:10.04.
