HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: TRN Top 10 rankings, Friday's top performers & updated standings

The TRN Top 10 is subjective and represents a team’s relevance in its district and regional playoffs. However, unlike the football version, head-to-head matchups may be weighted more since it’s not uncommon for teams in lower classifications to beat those in higher. But if a team in a higher classification doesn’t project as well in its district or region, then an opponent it may have a win against could be ranked higher. Record and preseason ranking are in parenthesis.

GIRLS TRN TOP 10

1. Nocona (28-3, 1) – Six straight district titles. In recent memory, the only local girls programs who had a similar run of dominance in recent memory are Windthorst (during the Tatum Veitenheimer era and slightly before) and Burkburnett (during the Paradize and Eternity Jackson era). Kyle Spitzer has been the head coach for all six of those championships, and the Lady Indians have lost just one district game during his tenure.

2. Newcastle (27-1, 2) – Every week we talk about the Lady Cats as Class A state title contenders, but now that the postseason brackets are starting to line up, this team is an overwhelming favorite to advance to at least the Region III-A Tournament in Mansfield.

3. City View (17-11, 3) – The Lady Mustangs are up to 10 consecutive wins, and they locked up a share of the District 7-3A title. They’ll try to clinch it outright Tuesday when Holliday visits.

4. Harrold (21-2, 5) – Harrold has thoroughly dominated District 16-A and will draw Knox City in the first round of the playoffs. While Roby will want to have its say, Harrold may be the favorite to win its portion of the bracket and make a Region II-A Tournament appearance.

5. Holliday (17-8, 6) – The Lady Eagles get their chance at redemption Tuesday, hoping to erase the memory of a second-half letdown against City View three weeks ago. They get a piece of the District 7-3A title with a win and force a seeding game with the Lady Mustangs if they can get the road win.

More: TRN SPORTS SCOREBOARD: High school basketball, soccer results for Jan. 30 through Feb. 3

6. Windthorst (20-6, 4) – The Trojanettes have lost just twice in 2024 – both to Nocona. Windthorst is locked in as the No. 2 seed in the postseason, but as we’ve stated multiple times, we always expect a couple playoff wins from this program.

7. Burkburnett (20-7, 7) – Burkburnett also earned a share of a district title Friday and can claim 7-4A outright by beating Sanger for the second time Tuesday. This time the Lady Dogs must do it on the road.

8. Electra (21-9, 8) – Electra is firmly set as the No. 2 seed in District 16-A. The Lady Tigers have made program history with the basketball program the last two years. They will attempt a strong playoff run that will start against Rotan.

9. Throckmorton (24-4, 10) – There’s either a seeding game or coin toss coming for the Lady Hounds, who should end up tied with Graford for third in District 21-A. The difference is fairly significant with a matchup against Forestburg for third place and either Slidell or Bellevue for second place.

10. Vernon (17-15, NR) – The Lady Lions were idle Friday but get back into the rankings based on their positions as the current clear No. 3 seed in the competitive District 7-3A. All playoff spots in that district have now been clinched with Iowa Park nabbing the final spot, keeping Jacksboro out of the postseason.

Dropped out – Forestburg (9).

BOYS TRN TOP 10

1. Benjamin (15-0, 1) – What a week for Grayson Rigdon. He surpassed 2,000 career points Tuesday, then posted back-to-back triple-doubles Friday and Saturday, leading the Mustangs to the District 16-A title. He’s a walking triple-double. Oh, and freshman teammate Keegan Hayes added his third triple-double of the season Saturday.

2. Holliday (26-2, 2) – The Eagles are a win away from claiming the District 7-3A title outright. They’re also approaching a feat we didn’t think possible this season – an undefeated run through District 7-3A. But back-to-back tough road trips to City View and Vernon await this week.

3. Hirschi (12-10, 3) – Hirschi got a well-deserved night off Friday and now has the task of slowing down two high-octane offenses in Gainesville and Burkburnett this week. But the Huskies could be District 7-4A champs by Friday.

4. Burkburnett (20-8, 4) – Burkburnett and Hirschi are facing trap games this week. Any game before those two rivals meet is worthy of this designation, but Friday’s meeting between the Huskies and Bulldogs is different because it’s going to be the last one. Ever.

5. Knox City (24-2, 5) – The Greyhounds won by 60 points and had four players reach double figures Friday against Rule. We’re anxiously anticipating another regional tournament showdown between Knox City and Benjamin.

6. Nocona (20-11, 6) – These Indians are so well battle tested. They have successfully navigated the toughest part of their District 9-2A schedule with back-to-back games against Seymour and Windthorst twice. We’ve made a big deal out of Hirschi’s non-district schedule. Nocona challenged itself in non-district and is seeing the fruit of those labors now.

7. City View (16-9, 9) – The Mustangs are playing their best basketball of the season. And that’s a good thing with Holliday visiting Tuesday. Beating the Eagles may not be enough to run them down for a piece of the District 7-3A title, but the Mustangs can make a big statement to the district and region with a win.

8 Electra (24-4, 7) – Electra just gave Benjamin its toughest challenge of the season in a 98-77 loss Friday. That’s wild to think about. Now the Tigers hope they can get a third shot at the Mustangs.

9. Vernon (18-8, 8) – The Lions come out of their open date with a chance to avenge a district loss to Bowie, hosting the Rabbits on Tuesday. Then they can make their own loud statement when Holliday visits Friday.

10. Seymour (12-14, 10) – The Panthers have benefitted from a couple breakout performances this season. We’ve noted Payton Sullivan’s in an earlier version of these rankings. Freshman Keaton Anderson is also making an impact, often leading the Panthers in scoring over the past couple weeks.

TUESDAY’S GAMES TO WATCH

GIRLS

Burkburnett at Sanger – It’s a District 7-4A title game. Burk can seal it outright with a win. Sanger can earn a share and a shot at the No. 1 seed. Burk won the first meeting, 44-40.

Holliday at City View – The stakes are the exact same as Burkburnett and Sanger. City View is in the driver’s seat, looking for an 11th straight win. City View won the first meeting 53-48 in an emotional fourth-quarter comeback.

Seymour at Windthorst – Windthorst hasn’t locked up the No. 2 seed yet. The Trojanettes must beat Seymour for a second time or face a possible seeding game. Windthorst won the first meeting, 55-46.

BOYS

Holliday at City View – The first of two big road games for the Eagles, but they can win the District 7-3A title outright with a win here. Holliday dominated the first meeting, 55-36.

Bowie at Vernon – Bowie has struggled recently, but the Rabbits do own a 49-47 victory against the Lions.

Seymour at Windthorst – These two are fighting for the No. 2 seed in District 9-2A. Seymour is currently a game ahead of the Trojans and holds a 64-47 victory from the first meeting.
