High school basketball: Penn's Lauren Walsh an Indiana All-Star

Lauren Walsh did a little bit of everything her senior season for the Penn girls basketball team.

It was enough to earn the standout guard a prestigious honor.

Walsh was one of 13 seniors statewide named to the IndyStar Indiana Girls All-Star Team Monday.

Walsh will represent Penn in June when the Indiana squad faces Kentucky in the annual two-game series. The teams will play June 7 at a location in Kentucky to be determined and then face off June 8 in Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Walsh helped lead coach Kristi Ulrich's team to an 18-7 mark and a Class 4A sectional runner-up finish to Northridge. The Kingsmen posted a 9-2 mark in Northern Indiana Conference play.

"Lauren's hard work, coachability and dedication, the ability to push herself, and trusting the process had led her to this amazing opportunity," said Penn coach Ulrich via text Monday afternoon. "We are excited to watch Lauren compete as part of the historic Indiana All-Star series."

Walsh, who is undecided on her college choice, averaged 12.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. She also averaged 2.1 assists and 3.2 steals per game and shot 41 percent overall from the field. Walsh was second in 3-pointers at 44-of-130 and shot 74 percent from the free throw line.

Walsh is the eighth Penn player to earn All-Star honors on the girls side and the sixth for Ulrich.

Walsh, who was a second team All-NIC selection, finished her prep career with 698 points.

The Indiana All-Star team includes 12 Division I commits and will be coached by Andy Maguire of Zionsville. Ulrich coached the All-Star team last season. The Indiana girls team leads the all-time series with Kentucky 53-41.

The All-Star team will also play versus the Indiana Junior All-Stars on June 5 at Kokomo.
